Outboard Question

I am going to buy a 7.5 mercury outboard from my father-in law and it's a long shaft with a extension. I think it was used for a sail boat kicker motor. My question is when i take the extension part of the motor (the outer housing above the cavitation plate) do I have to buy a shorter shaft or is it sleeved? all I have to do is take the extension off and re bolt it back together?

Thanks for your help

Keith

Keith,

I think you will need to drop the lower unit and then decide what needs to be done. I would think the shaft is a solid piece but then again I have no experience with a long shaft. Call Mercury with the serial number, they should be able to tell you exactly what you need.

It is probably a 2 piece shaft. You will have to see if the shift shaft and water tube were made up into a long one piece also.
