Outboard shifter problems.....

Just bought a used 17'Bass Tracker and apparently when the previous owner replaced the water pump impeller he got something wrong with the shifter. Forwards is reverse and reverse is forwards. Is this a shift rod problem in the lower unit or something awry under the motor cover. My first foray into a bigger motor. Oh its a 40HP Mercury Pro 1994.

Any help would be appreciated.

Sounds like the lower was put back on in the wrong gear in relation to the shifter. Not sure how the shift setup is on that motor...is it just one cable with a cable setup under the hood?

Kyle ,

Here is waht i did on my old Merc i had , drop the lower unit , put the shift lever in nuetral position and after you have the lower unit dropped take a pair of vise crips and CAREFULLY turn the shift shaft so that you get to the nuetral spot in the gear box , you can tell becuase the prop will spin without any pressure on it . Slide the lower unit back into place making sure not to move the shift lever and the splines should go together . It worked for me on my little 9.8 Merc infact i rebuilt the whole lower end with new gears and shift cam worked great until the motr seized up one day . Good luck!!!
