View attachment D bay at low tide december B.jpgIt's been a little slow here in Jersey for the last week and a half or so. All of the ducks in the area that I hunt are sitting on the big water of Delaware Bay in the day. So I tried a low tide hunt yesterday along the bayfront instead of back in the salt meadow(that's what we call the marsh here).

So I shot a nice black duck and had several more coming in and begging me to shoot them, but I obeyed the law and kept it at 1.View attachment black duck and decoy.jpg

But there is always something else to do, and one of my favorite activities in the winter is to go to one of my super secret oyster beds and grab a couple of dozen to go along with the black duck. Cleaning and opening them is a chore and you have to love them to clean all of the mud off, but then you get to the good part. Here is a nice double. You could easily think this is only one oyster.

But a close look shows two

This is hard work. Just because she only had to pick up one duck doesn't mean Rose wasn't working her butt off, staying alert and cruising the mud flats looking for stuff. Every good dog deserves a nice comfy bed when they get in from a day out.

And a nice dinner was enjoyed tonight!

Awww shucks!

That dog looks to be happy and pretty well nested there.

It'd be fun to have access to the oysters out here, but there are only a few places where we can get them without fear of having the deputy or Tribal Council on us in a heart beat.

Good eats.

Greg,
we have a resurgence of oysters in this area due to the help of a few operators working the area with their seed stock. They are a great winter addition to a meal.
Was that a one decoy spread? Looks like the block worked like a charm.

That sounds like a great outing! I'd love to see, let alone shoot a black duck, but they're quite rare here in IA. I'v never seen one here. As for the oysters, I love them even more than ducks, but LOL, they're even more rare here!!!

That is great Greg, some of my super secret spots are calling me. We have some good tides coming up.

Hey Greg - Every time I spend a few hours in the marsh.........I start thinking about steamers........thanks for the upgrade !

Now if I can just make it till lunch time !

As with most thing the quality is in the experience, looks like you had a good time. What make is the black duck decoy.

That is a Jode Hillman black duck decoy, and is only a part of my spread, but I thought it went well for the picture. But the truth be told is I took a junkyard mostly plastic spread that day as the wind was blowing a little and I was alone, although I did have a couple of cork blacks and mallards along for the ride. Sean Sutton and his son had stopped by just before I left and I thought he was going to have a coronary when he saw that, particularly since I also have several of his birds in my cedar spread in addition to Jode's. But I fed them at the shack and calmed them down with a sausage and peppers sandwich and he quickly forgave me.
