Pretty oldsquaw pics

Hope everyone had a Merry Christmas. Pretty quiet out here, weather has been terrible for duck hunting, and can't bring myself to finish the y-boards until after hunting season. But the long weekend is looking up!

Had a nice oldsquaw hunt out of the two man Busick layout boat. Here is a pic of one of my buddies cedar o.s. hens, she looks happy!

That's an oyster boat in the background, some of the wooden ones out here are pretty old, but just dig that sheer. I think they are among the best looking working boats around. Aft wheelhouse, and the captains and crew are friendly and know where the broadbill are hanging. Don't forget your wallet, fresh oysters are pretty cheap and eat a little better than oldsquaw...

Couple of the nicer birds, super long tails and just pretty.

His boat is a Lund Alaskan, named the Wild Woodpecker. He's a hell of a carver, and hell of a carpenter. The cedar skids are for hauling the layout boat.

You may have noticed the photo upgrade, got a new Leica digital camera for Christmas. Now I have to figure out how to make the pics smaller!

Cheers,
Dave

Yeah the hunting has been terrible - however, I have to admit, it could have been better if I learned to set up better. So, half lousy weather and half zipper head moves on my part.

Dave, what are you guys seeing for brant? I'm hearing not much in RI, some but few decent sized flocks.

Are you planning on coming to RI this Saturday? if so, we should hook up somehow, the season is slipping away.

Dear Andrew,

We haven't seen a lot of brant either... they were here a few days before the season opened and when I looked for them today they were scattered. I had a few hundred dialed in two weekends ago, but the season was closed for that Saturday and then everybody got busy with holiday stuff.

I shouldn't complain as much as I do about the weather, but dang it, 45 degrees and sunny? At least there is a little front coming through on Friday, should freeze things up a bit inland.

I'm tenatively planning on coming up this Sunday. How does that look for you?

How is the new pup doing? I've always admired that breed in particular, and all fuzzy dogs in general. Here's a shot of Hans goofing off. He went from being a serious retriever to an amateur this month that's for sure. I think he's retrieved 4 ducks... and we haven't been grouse hunting since early November.

The Snow Goose is doing all I ask of her, looking nice and salty and a little scuffed up from hunting. Thanks for all your advice and encouragement, it is a great design.

Best,
Dave
