Question for the camera guys

There are several folks on this site that post amazing pictures; I need your advice.

My wife has a birthday this week and I want to get her a Digital SLR. She currently has a Nikon N65 film camera and a couple of big fancy lenses to go with it. I want a digital SLR that will work with her lenses. Any suggestions?

.

Hi Rocky - I'm not in the amazing pictures club yet but I want to try to help you to at least know some questions. Because my experience is with canon, this may not be entirely correct but here are some ideas that, I hope, are helpful to you.

1. Find out if the lenses that she has are compatible with the nikon digital SLR cameras on the market............any good sized retailer should be able to advise on that. It's likely that some lenses will work and that would then mean it would be smart to stay with Nikon as a brand. Lenses are fairly expensive and this would get her started without having to buy both camera and lens

2. You can view the Nikon models at any good sized online retailer like B&H photo in New York, to get an idea about the different levels. I would guess that many operational functions are also similar for Nikon moving from film to digital...........as is the case with canon.

3. Camera bodies are sold with all of the software needed to download images to your pc as well as do some adjusting and saving and file organization. If you do a google search on Nikon SLRs - it will likely lead to some user forums that can also give you some ideas as well as sometimes find good values on used gear.............fredmiranda.com is worth a look.

Hope this helps.

Nikon Lens essentially will work ... I shoot a 1980 600/f on my all of my DSLR bodies.

The N65 is a fairly new (and one of the last) film bodies that Nikon made. As long as you don't get teh D40 or D40s.. The New DSLR will work. Unlike Canon, Nikon didn't scrap their old F bayonet mounts, so you can use most of the old Nikkor manual focus lenses. A few body/lens combo's have issues due to internal/external AF motors. Those are isolated issues. The low end (D40) DSLR's have AF issues on some lenses.

Sorry Rocky, I use a Canon however do your reading and follow some of the suggestions already given. I have a 170-500mm zoom by Sigma that I used on my old Canon Rebel 35mm camera. I sent the lens in and had it chipped for Canon digital cameras and it works like a charm.

Al you must have gotten the rare Sigma 170-500. I hate mine... pictures are never sharp...

Then again, I thought it was good, until I did a side by side with a 500 /f4.... I haven't used it since...

I decided to go with the D3100 from B&H, came in a package deal with an autofocus 18-55 lens for $580. Her old lenses will fit, but the autofocus on her 70-300 lens won't work. To be able for the old autofocus to work correctly I would have to upgrade to the D90 which was $799 just for the camera body.

Thanks for the input, I hope I make her happy.
