Question on motor size for 14' seaclass

We have ordered a new motor for our 14' TDB seaclass (25HP Suzuki 4 stoke) back in February and it has not come in and don't have any idea when it is going to arrive. The dealer has a new 20HP Suzuki 4 stoke in stock (long shaft, electric start and power trim and tilt) that we can get for 400 dollars less. The question is are we going to be under powered and wishing we had the 25. Most times it's two guys and a dog and a dozen and half decoys. Any info would be greatly appreciated.

Hi Pete,
I can?t comment on the horsepower needed for your boat. I can say that I have 2 Suzuki?s on my big boat ( main and kicker) they have been great. I have a 20 for the kicker. I do know that the 20hp is a 2 cylinder and the 25hp is a 3 cylinder and weighs about 40 more pounds. Just something to consider.

I think that load in that boat with a 20hp pushing it would be underpowered. Why not go with a Yamaha or Mercury 25hp?

With that load, probably a little under powered, not that a 25 is significantly more...

Good luck finding anything new that needs to be shipped in, All dealers are crying for motors..

One of my hunting partners in VT has a 14SC, has a 25hp Merc 2 stroke on it. Not nearly enough motor. I know I would be looking for at least a 30hp, and would like to try the 40hp 2 stroke on it.

By himself maybe, but 2 of us and a dog and I am laying out on the front deck to eventually get it on plane.

I have a 13' aluminum rib inflatable that weighs 225lbs. Right now it has a 20hp honda on it (~110lbs). It is usually pretty good with my 3 boys under 5 and my wife... maybe the dog too. But, if you add another person it probably isn't going to get up on plane. Instead of increasing horsepower I dropped the pitch of the prop 2" and its pretty amazing how much of a difference that makes on the low end. I would be it does more than going up 5 horsepower. Although, I did lose maybe a mph or more at top end. It is still sensitive to too much weight, but I like that I can still move the motor around a bit on my own and going up to 30hp or 40hp adds so much more weight. [/url]

Agreed on maxing out the hp. I have the glass DW15 which isn't too dissimilar from your boat with a Suzuki DF40 on it and it's good. I can get it to plane (after I dropped the pitch by one degree) with 4 people, 3 dozen decoys, and a kayak strapped to the side. It takes a little to get up there but it goes. Helps to put the bigger guys in the bow, Andrea is probably half their weight and doesn't help much as a boat ballast.

Thanks for all input. I think we are going to stay with the 25 or see if we can find a 30HP, they are the same weight. As for why we went with Suzuki over Yamaha we couldn't get a 25 with a tiller, power trim and tilt. and eclectic start. It would have to be installed after and for a cost of a additional 1500.00.
Thanks Pete
