I heard that Roy sold his molds a while back.. Just wondering who bought them and is he using the molds or what happened to the molds ??

Thanks.......................

Thanks guys.... That is why I am a here... This has always been a great place to get info... About 6 weeks ago I lost my buddy.. He was 14.5 years old.. He was still in great shape when he semi retired, just old enough to get out on easy hunts but young enough to be a PIA around the house.. He had a great life.. We have always been a member of a Goose Club.. At 10 it was easy to hunt for him in out of a cedar box blind with no jumping in and out of the 18' landau.. In Maryland we are cut back to 1 goose a day with a 30 day season which I am fine with it.. I can remember the Goose moratorium in the 90s.. Honestly that was a few years late.. I am still a member of the Goose club.. I am there for the good and slow seasons..
Now for the million dollar , who makes a planing bbsb ?

Sounds like you and your pup made great memories, sorry for your loss.

I grew up in northeast PA dairy country back in 1978-'86. In the early 80s, the sky and local cornfields were full of geese during migration. It wasn't fall until you heard the first flock of honkers fly over the house. Its a sight and sound I sure miss.

John,

First off, very sorry for the loss of your buddy.

As far as planing BBSB, tough to find these days. Duck Invader is the newest builder on the block. I haven't seen their boats in person but to my understanding, they are similar in a way to the Duck Boss boats of old. Closest you'll come, production-wise, to a Roy is probably that.

Having said that, Roy's "special recipe" has not been created since he stopped building. Don Federanko builds a very nice boat but they're a little heavier.

Eric,

My dilemma is I need something that can hunt 2 guys (no dog...yet), haul decoys, and hide in 2' tall spartina. Roy managed to capture lightning in a bottle. I've gotten to see some of these boats first hand, they are something special.

Some of the Devlin's out there definitely fit the bill. They just don't seem to come up for sale too often. I would consider building one but I don't think I have the skills just yet. It does intrigue me being able to build the boat I'll hunt from.

Don?t underestimate yourself,
I?m pretty sure if you can cut plywood you can build a Devlin.
It?s having the time, garage space and right tools that seems the be the harder part! Seems like I?ve never had all three in place at the same time or I?d have a Devlin bluebill in the driveway.

In a few years when my boys get older I plan on something like this. Find an old glass hull, cut it down and put on sides and flaps like Roy?s. Could be wrong but Pretty sure that?s all he did way back when. Then just made a top mold. A lot of guys in Salem county did it and look just like Roy?s.

Here?s an old bay liner Capri done like it

Your right Jay. Thats the reason they always sell before they are even/for sale/
I was lucky to add a layout style 11 to the fleet this year, and its a sweet one man rig. Itll hide in 12 inches of grass and pole in4 inches of water.

Way back when Roy based his bottom hull off existing designs, but modified it and made his own molds for his original few boats. They were made for himself and his buddies.

Lots of knock offs have been cobbled together with varying degrees of success. Some nice, and quite a few pitiful.

Part of Roys /lightening/ as Jay put it, is that he was a meticulous and skilled builder. Never cutting corners for the sake of speed or profits. It shows in his guarantee. Any boat he built, regardless of how many times its been sold, is warranted by him or Ray, for any defect or damage. Even if its the owners fault. And Ive seen him stand behind this myself.

Donny makes a great boat, but they are almost as hard to find as Roys, if not more so.

Here is a pic I have had built it is a alum. sneak on steroids LOL This one is 14'. 48" bottom, basically took the duck wrangler dimensioned and played with them a little bit, I made a tbd type blind for it and power it with a 23 hp copperhead mud motor. very seaworthy we had it loaded up the other day and had to cross the intercoastal with tide and wind, never had any pucker factor. Probably be really fast with outboard.View attachment IMG_3144.JPG

Jode,

At some point I think NJ will be recognized as the true "Church of Roy." I remember one morning I pulled up at the ramp and counted no less than 5. I've seen a couple. I know you have one and I know a bunch of buddies of mine have one.

I was unfortunately about 3 years late coming into the sport. If I had come in just a little earlier, I would probably have one by now. I have my sights set when one does come up.
