Ruh roh.... Jr. seems to be in a bit of trouble for not being able to identify birds.

Which decoy maker is making the first to in honor of our Presidents son naive ways in Italy?

Pretty cool looking bird. I have known these to be shot in texas (if I remember right). Or if anyone has already made one, post them up to see. I might try my hand at one in the next couple weeks when I get a few other things done that I want to. Might be kind of a fun little thing to do and try.

Don Jnr posts video shooting 'rare duck' and Italians are furious

Environmentalists and local MPs have demanded an inquiry after claiming footage of a camouflaged Don Jr showed him shooting at the rare birds in a protected area.

I hope he gets it put on the wall. Just to rub it in more. I do think this bird is actually protected in Italy though. So he might face a fine or two and a small slap on the wrist. But yes they are blowing it out of proportion in a big way.

If the duck really is protected, bad form for publishing a video. Hopefully it's just a fine and it blows over. Or, Italy is likely to be "invited" as the 52nd (or 53rd) state. Just a short trip to the new Riviera, hunt ducks in the morning, swim in the Levant in the afternoon. ;)

One interesting revelation in the story is that ducks are hunted from foxholes. Perhaps a new category for the DHBP Resources section?

I do agree with the publishing of the video. It is certainly a bad look and I guess in the video he even mentions that this a rare duck but not sure what it is.... DOH! Like I did have not sex with that woman I only.... well you know the rest. Probably an honest mistake. I remember being very young and having to carry around a booklet on the species when I was hunting and learning them still. I would probably have to do that today if i were in Italy hunting, but not everyone understands a duck is not just a duck. I found in one article this bird can carry up to 8 months in jail or a $2000 fine. He will obviously get the fine.

I found the foxhole statement interesting as well. Im kind of assuming they are like a pit blind or semi sunk in box next to water. I havent really looked into it though to confirm.

It appears that way to me as well.

Several articles said the duck (or perhaps ducks in general?) can only be hunted by permit issued only to Italian nationals. I guess the Dakotas, Kansas and several quite large counties in the soon to be 51st state learned from that rule book.

I gather the hubbub started as a result of a tree hugger raising the red flag. He was proud to have turned in the King of Spain a few years back for a similar offense. One article says they were with a guide who had all necessary permits, and that there was no way to identify who shot the bird. But Jr.'s spokesman said he would cooperate with any investigation, which is far better than arguing about it in the press.

Ya it seems like its being blown way out of proportion right now. My guess it was a flock of birds that came in, everyone pulled triggers, it fell out of the sky with others, but because he is who he is, they are prosecuting him in the press. I mean its not going anywhere. They found how many of hunters white baggies in the white house and did nothing about it?

Yeah, if anything happens it'll be a fine. It's a shame for hunting though, to get the bad press. At least he isn't accused of shooting 33 birds over the limit. Not a good look for those knuckleheads.

are you talking about the incident in Texas? All gadwall wasnt it? I briefly heard something about it. Them texas boys have had a rough 5 years (or so it seems). They finally got a burner and tried using up all the ammo they had left laying around from the last 4 years of buying before it went bad I suppose. If they were 33 over, you know they probably shot at least 100 a piece to harvest that.

OR......................

they were habitual poachers and this wasnt the only 33 over they have been. And if you're burning them like that, its time to check the feed source and see what extra corn was spilled in places. Birds dont get shot like that and not learn, unless there is a reason to keep returning.

Yes, mostly gadwall in TX. Looks like 54 birds for four guys, so only 30 over for four limits. Article says the pinch included using lead shot and one guy had no license.

Well.... when high fence hunting is a norm.... what can you expect? A duck is a duck right?

sounds like a disaster. Like one of those moments in life where all you can do is shake your head and just hope the group is smart enough to retain the education they are about to receive. I mean no license, lead shot, and no sense of limits... this was obviously a group that just landed on a spot probably LOADED with gadwall. An untouched spot no one else hunted, and they just blew it all to hell not knowing any better. That would be my guess, but no group makes that many mistakes and know the laws or rules. many say throw the book at them, ban them from hunting, hang them with Jesus.... but honestly, they probably just need a good ol fashioned fine and some education and bet it doesnt happen again. If it did happen again, or they already had a history of sketch shit, Ill provide the rope for the hanging myself.
 
One of the great things about this site in the fairly long time I've been here is the lack of political posts. This one has not gone off the rails, but it's the first I've seen in a long time. Leaving personalities out of it, if you find yourself standing over a pile of dead birds and can't identify one of them, you've done something wrong. If you shoot a protected species, you deserve whatever the consequence for that is where you are hunting. If you make a video yourself standing over a pile of dead birds where one of them is a protected species you can't identify, you're a knucklehead. No idea whether any president's son actually did these things. I looked for the supposed video and couldn't find it.

I 100% agree with you. The little kicker in this case is the people he was hunting with technically could shoot this bird because they were Italian natives, as long as they had all the permits (which they did). Even the guides stated they are not sure who shot the bird. So it is hard to pin this bird on Jr. Of course they will try, because of who he is. But im with you, if youre gonna post it, and not know exactly whats in front of you, kind of deserve any smoke that comes your way for lighting that fire.

I didnt really intend for it to get too political. Kind of want some decoy makers (myself included) to make a few of these. Maybe we can send them to the white house and get them displayed on one of the water features. All it will say is "For Jr. and in Loving memory of Italy". Or we can find a way to photoshop them all together and call it the Jr. Series.
