there has to be some trick i dont know. sanding this boat is killing me my arms and back are taking a beating am i do something wrong is there an easier process or do i just have to suck it up and continue to slowly bring this hull back to life. A friend of mine saw the boat for the first time since i started working on it and thought i bought another boat i took that as a compliment. All my quick steel patch work i did on the gunwale is sanding out nice its hard to even tell where it was at. i still have to put a few rivets into the center seat support. maybe if i get my butt in gear i could have this boat painted to do some trout fishing this spring but i will be happy if its done by 4th of july. i can not wait to be done sanding. my next project the sanding should go alot smoother with it being fiber glass rather then alluminum. i plan to spend most of saturday sanding the boat as long as i can find some motivation in all honesty i could probably get the inside of the boat finished on the sanding and get it vaccumed out and prepped for paint if i work on it and dont take any fishing brakes and the wife leaves me be. but its hard to avoid the fishing brakes when i look out the window and see the lake and my wife seems to be able to find me where ever i hide. i guess ill just have to close the curtain lock the door and turn up the radio.Any how this turned into a rant i seem to be loosing motivation on the sanding sooooo ready to start painting but i keep telling my self it will be a better finished product if i dont rush it. Any advice to help on the sanding be great.

Chris~

I recall a post within the past year about sandblasting an aluminum boat - I think it was an Alumacraft Ducker. I have blasted one aluminum boat but am no expert. I do know that there is a variety of blasting media and care needs to be taken not to distort the aluminum. I believe the consensus was to have a shop do it (I was able to borrow a blaster at my boatyard - I did the entire 12' hull inside and out in about an our as I recall.)

Hope this helps,

SJS

maybe i could talk to the guy at the local vocational school and get the students to sand blast the inside. it would be so bad to sand if it wasnt for the seats ribs and rivets.

If the paint is on that good, why are you removing it? I would only remove the stuff that is blistered up and scaling off. Make sure you prime the bare aluminum with appropriate primer before putting on the top coat.

Paint it and use it.

the boat is bare aluminum im trying to get the dirt and grime that is built up on it from sitting outside for 30- 40 years so i can prime and paint it.

Mark W recently re-habbed an old Ducker....search his posts for some insight into getting the old oxide and stuff off the surface
