Sculling Question.

Does anyone have a link to a video that shows how to scull a boat? I don't have a scull boat, and don't plan on buying one, but was curious as to how it is done, and the written directions I have found don't really make sense to me. I'm just curious about it, and was wondering if somebody had some video.

Here is a side view of a Shaw & Tenney Sculling oar.You could install an oarlock on the stern of almost any boat and with a 7-8 foot oar stroke from side to side until you get some forward motion.Set ups have been with a outrigger or a hole in the transom, either on the left side or right, depending on which was your shooting side.Zack Taylor's book,Succesful waterfowling, shows a couple boats. One with the outrigger.Rocking your wrist back and forth is the motion required, and it takes practice.Perhaps Lou has a video.

Lou has a sculling video. It's good, its funny (camera is dropped at one point), lots of hunting footage and it's how I learned to scull. I had a life time sculler try to teach me and that didn't work. Lou's video broke the stroke into its basics and I was off and under control.

Best of luck!

Andy,I believe it is simular to an airfoil,ie rounded top and flatter bottom on left side in the picture,(could be wrong).I've never seen a specific sculling oar, just used a straight rowing oar to scull with in a 16' skiff. http://home.hiwaay.net/~parsons/

FSU Vs FSD is stuff of deep argument between scullers. Personally I'm a FSU guy.

FSU Flat Side Up

FSD Flat Side Down

Pictures Note page link on left side I can't link to that page directly: Oar

I ma a FSU guy as well. I have two of these oars and there are a great oar for a bigger float like on the east coast. A west coast float needs a thinner and wippier oar in my opinion. Sculling is all about feel and like a base ball bat, gulf club or a hockey stick. Each person is going to have different opinions and likes and dislikes about certain styles oars and the float they are pushing with that oar. The ore is like an extension on you body. How it feels in the water may be different to each sculler. Lou's video is good.

Lou is the right person for a beginner to learn from. I build one of Lou's kit boats and found it to be a versatile craft. Lou sells oars for his boats. Once you have learned to use the oar with the side to side sweeping motion, then you will need to learn when and where to make skulling work in your area. I also put camo netting on my boat and use it as floating layout. Lou has photos on his web site which can be helpful in choosing how you want to setup your boat. His boats are nice with the transom for a motor. His boat also paddle like a canoe and can go through shallow water at about one foot depth with a motor on shallow run setting. If you can get to Michigan duck fest you can take one for a test run. I think it is this next weekend. Contact Lou for details.

I do not think the guy is looking to scull but was just trying to see what it is all about(the hole mechanics of the oar movement and what not.)

get Lou's video. It is the only one out there that shows you the how too.
