SHOTGUN QUESTION

I have a older sears shotgun with one of those adjustable poly chokes on it
they say not to shoot steel shot out of it because it is not safe to do so
can this be cut off and a screw in choke be installed to make it usable for duck hunting for my son

I have a model 300 Ted Willams S&R. It has a poly choke, I shoot 2 3/4 steel through it without any problems. Did they expand on why it wasn't safe?

Most guns with adjustable chokes were threaded on and fairly thin on the threads. Some have blown off when steel was introduced. Cutting off the choke may leave the barrel out of spec for screw in chokes. Go to Brownells catalog on chokes. There is a formula [outside dia and thickness of barrel]. Some Rem's barrels can only be cut for thin wall chokes.
Check the local clubs and find a well used but modern gun for use. Have the choke opened to lt mod and go at it. Some old guns have served there time and should be retired. Safety First

The vast majority of gun repair questions should go to a qualified gunsmith - and not every one out there is qualified.

By the time you pay to cut and install chokes you may have spent most of what a used 870 express would cost.

This. Buy a used 870 or even a Mossberg 500 and retire the other gun.

Who were "they"? If it wasn't poly choke I'd check with them first. They are still around and can answer if that age of choke is OK with steel. I've heard of many people who like them for steel shot, just not with too much constriction.

I shot Steel shot out of a Poly choked Remington 1100 3", that was a full choke when I bought it. Screw in chokes at that time were way out of my price range. Never had problem with the Poly choke, as long as it was on a Very Open setting. Even had it checked by Poly Choke. Sorry I traded that gun, for a 11-87, that came with way off center screw in chokes....
