Thats one lost BBWD!!!
They are greatly expanding their range, seem to be showing up farther north every year.
But they are definitely not cold-tolerant birds, even the ones in coastal Alabama tend to go south to peninsular Florida by time the season rolls around.

They are delicious. Lighter meat than teal, juicy delicious legs and thighs. My favorite eating duck.
Interesting about the woodduck boxes in LA being overrun. Here in FL, they do the same but the woodducks nest earlier usually than the blackbellies so by the time the blackbellies get to nesting, the woodducks are out of their boxes.

So what would happen if I shot that duck in WI? It is not listed in the regs as far as a limit or anything. It isn't even listed as a species we can shoot.
So if I was out and shot one in the wee early morning hours, did I shoot something illegal for WI and if not, what does it count as in the bag?
I remember a couple years back when another rare bird cam though the area. Even stayed in the place I hunt. I believe it was a Scoter but not sure.

Dani is right on the the money. I know hunters who love the drum sticks and thighs. The meat is tender.
Under federal guidance, and in most states, if there is no specified limit, you can shoot up to 6, just like gadwalls, wigdeon, teal, shovellors, and any other native duck with no specified limit.
Here in FL, there is a specified limit on Fulvous Whisting Ducks (2 I believe), but you can shoot up to 6 black bellies.
