Well I cleaned up my workshop finnaly and got around to making a couple of new calls. Last time I made one was september of 2005 im affraid to admit.

I turned a lil chunk of burl maple and cocobolo for the 1st one and then have been experimentin with some new tech's of laminates. This one was practice run of a glue jig i made so its of no real purpose or reason. The insert is from a august of 05 call. The experiment worked and I started glueing up another in walnut with persimon in thin strips and will take a few days to glue, cut reglue and cut ect ect.

Few photos of these 2 for ya. still have to resand and more finish to fill the pores yet but gives you the idear.

This call is Hedge, Walnut, Hedge, Paduk and Maple. The thin strips is what I hope to have 4 of them on the next call in white color on the walnut will have to see how it turns out. I like the effect of the inlay laminate and its more exciting than just turing regular wood thats for sure.

Dave,
Sweet calls. Do you mind sharing a few tricks? What are you using for the reed and how do you get the "Tune". Do you shape all the interiors the same for sound quality or do you tweak each one.
Thanks. I have a lathe at work that would be fine for turning a few old nuggets headed for the wood stove.

Luckily I already have MINE and its still sweet!

Maple burl and all...I should take a picture and show it, not sure if anyone ever got to see Dave's work

Dont mid at all ask away. I use Mylar for the reeds, you change the tone by the tone channel depth and the amount your round off the end. Reed length and thickeness also play a game in this. I make mine all one at a time no jig for the tone board shape its all guess work for me. They sell tone board jiggs and such but They tend to cost a weeeeee bit also lol. The stopper cork I use the rubberized cork from modle rail road.

If you go on amazon Greg Keats has a book on making calls now its a nice book. It deals with most all aspects but I dont make mine in the same process thats for sure. I am self taught at this and started back in 1999. Fun to do once you figure it out. Ill post a pic of one of my 1st ones when its not 1am lol. Heres an inside shot of the cocobolo call. Shoot me an email with any questions and Ill do my best.

gotta love the oldies or olders I guess. Each is different and so is the tone since im not replicating. The one on my lanyard is still my best ever for my style of blowin da call. I have never replicated it but then again I have never set out to try. I guess my old way of making them is luck of the draw to a point but it works for me lol.

Nice looking calls. You've got me itching to make some. It's been a few years that I made my last one but will clear my boats out of my shop and turn some. Where do you get your reeds? I use to get mine from Mallards but could use a new source. Happy Holidays!

I purchased the mylar from COPE PLASTICS out of Cedar Rapids a few years back in 24x48" sheets. If you need some let me know I got PLEANTY! I just cut my own with a paper cutter for width then trim by hand and shave em a lil. The mylar sheets make great templates to cut for stencils also I did that with one sheet for the boat stencil. Tough material and works great for that also. If you order from cope use a business name they dont like to sell to PEOPLE!

lookin good dave! i remember you used to make a lot of calls, but haven't seen them in a while. nice to know you are getting back into it. I've been thinking of starting it up for the last year. I've made a couple using huts kits and a dremel... that was before i started carving decoys... I'm just about ready to venture into it since it seems cheaper and quicker than a decoy :) how much to whip me one up in dymondwood? or can i trade a decoy for one <<evil grin>>

Jeff

Nice looking calls Dave! You know, I accept late Christmas gifts.....LOL

You guys, I've been in the same boat when Daves lets go with his call. Man the volume he gets is astonishing. It puts my poor old Mallard Tones to shame. Really I put them away. Hell I couldn't even hear mine.

Hopefully this will come thru...

This is one of Dave's creations...spalted maple

My buddy has an old call that has a sound that is great. I will take a look at the shape of the curve and the depth of the channel and give it a try.
Great looking results with the exotic wood strips. May get back to you about the mylar. Thanks again.

Jeff you will have to get with me on the swap. I dont have any Diamond Wood currently but have been looking at some. I am selling off a few on the big E currently to fund the aquisition of some more woods and burls that I want to use.

Scott thats a nice oldie for sure from back in the DAY lol...

here are the laminate inlays I was working on this past week I mentioned.... I like the sound of the Walnut and Lace ont he best. I made it a 3/4" reed just like the one I use and thats most likely why Im partial to it. The long walnut one has a std 1" reed and is sweet. The burl one is very raspy sometimes I take the toneboard a lil further than normal and get that kind of sound. The gluein is going well I want to get some thin filler stock and try some curved patterns next also.

I will be working with these 2 woods again. Walnut and Persimmon what a nice contrast in these 2 woods.
The Walnut is over 20 years old and cut from Iowa. The persimmon I got from Nick Tresco (old DHBP days) SEVERAL years back and its good and dry now.
Well thats what I have been working on this past week. I hope yall had a good NEW YEARS and Ed we need to get together to get a call made up that fits your style. Sounds like a good Janurary project to me :)

when i make my calls i use maple and persimmon, are great to work with as well. i use mylar , .025 , and the sound is great

Jim great looking calls and website! I love the how to section, its always fun to see how others make their calls and how much different we all do the process. If you dont mind send me an PM or email wonder where you got your tone board jig or if you had one custom made.

Im gettin ready to head back out trying to figure out my next laminate design I want to try. Didnt have time to get to the hobby shop for some super thin walnut today will try again tomorrow.

Thanks for the link I saved it.

Dave

Dave, for some reason I can't click on your name and get to a window that allows me to email or pm you. I kept plugging away at it until I came up with an insert I liked and then had a local machine shop make the jig from that insert. There are several others around now who specialize in making them from your insert. Send me an email and I will get the info to you. Jim
