Stitch and Glue Gunning Box

We slapped a box together today. The bottom and sides are 1/4"mahagony and the ends are 1/4" baltic birch underlayment. It will get filleted and taped on the inside and clothed on the outside. It will be towed behind the boat with a couple bags of decoys in it.

Bob, I didn't use any plans. It's probably most like the Sanford Box. The stern/foot end is 24"wide, 30" around the shoulder/arms area, and 18" at the bow/head end. I just drew a nice arc with a piece of 1/2" cpvc. The sides are 9" and are flat for 4' and then rise 6" to the bow. The end pieces angle out slightly to push the sides out. Overall dimension are something like 7'L x 32"W. The arc on the foot end is 13" H and the bow sits 19" H at level(6"rise and 13" end piece).

Got the fillets and tape done and got the inside wet out with epoxy today.

Hey Tod, the bottom and sides are actually mahogany plywood from a local store called windsor plywood. The ends are some pieces I had laying around from my broadbill (baltic birch). One sheet wasn't quite enough. The ends are 13" at the highest point of the arc.

Derek,
looks awesome and a lot easier than fitting the wood chines if you are not used to doing them. I thank you for adding to the ideas on these. They are a lot of fun to hunt out of and make a big difference getting birds in close compared to sitting up or standing on the shore.
Keep track of how much epoxy is needed to do a box. I am curious what the total amount needed is?

Bob

Derek,

What, no cherry or tiger maple verneer available? :>) :>)

Your box looks good, keep us updated as you progress thru your project.

Hey derek looks awesome I am planing the same kind of project this summer. What width of tape did you use for your fillets and did you do one or two layers of tape on each fillet. Also as Bob asked please let me know how much epoxy you use. Thanks

Thanks for the kind words boys.

Bob, my father-in-law actually tried to put the chines in. I argued with him that s&g would be soooooo much faster and easier, but he wanted to put the chine logs in there. After breaking several, and damaging the ply, he finally gave in!

You can see two spots on the side pieces that are peeled off. It will take some filling and sanding, but I think it will be fine, it's just a box right?

Dave, you're too funny! I think it is safe to say that you have made me laugh more than anyone on this forum over the last few years! :)

Chris, the tape is 4 inch, 9oz. from US Composites. Only one layer centered on the joint as the outside will get a 6oz. cloth. I plan on three coats of epoxy for the inside and a few coats of paint. It's just a box, I will NOT be using this in more than a few inches of water, and preferably, on the shore or floating bog! I do want it to tow well behind the boat though.

If towing is in the plan any fabric on the cover that folds over the edge and is attached to the side needs to be made water proof at the edge so side splash dosnt fill the box on a long tow.

Bob

You might have to put splash rails on the sides about three or four inches up It has been suggested that you use Occume or Merranti if you can get a hold of it. You know, have a multi wood boat. The design looks nice.
