Thanksgiving Fishin

Did a party boat trip yesterday. It was rough, got seasick by the end of the day but damn we caught fish. One thing for sure, fishing is better than the duck hunting here in Tampa.

That is quite a stringer of fish there Carl. how are you going to cook them? What is that long looking one? It looks like a fast one whatever it is.

I got out yesterday, the 10th time this fall and finally managed to beach a steelhead. Usually by now I'm knocking em dead on the stretch here on the Rogue River. This year we haven't had enough good rains to get the creeks up to get the fish moving en masse.

Help a northern, freshwater, trout-snob kind of guy our. What the species mix there? I think I see a Spanish mackerel? Various snappers?

Thanks!
The hogfish was cooked whole on the grill, good eats.
All the smaller fish were filleted and will be fried.
The long one is a king mackerel. Very fast fish with a mouth full of big teeth!

Big one is a king mackerel. Large orange one is a hogfish.
Rest are mostly white grunts, a few porgies and surf perch.
Also caught some short red grouper and grey snapper. Some other guys got some lane snapper.
We occasionally get Black Sea bass too.

Definitely have a huge range of eating' fish here. From offshore to freshwater.
There is one lake nearby that has a full of Mayan cichlids, I've been tempted to go catch some, I hear they are tasty.

We shot Cichlids with My buddies buckmark pistol. It was up in a hot spring in Idaho of all places. They are invasive there, and we could see for about 10 miles all around. My buddy blasted them and as soon as they came undone, all of their friends came in to eat them.

Carl,
Not only does that look like some good eating, that looks like it was also lots of fun. Did your shipmates give you a proper thank you, for any involuntary chumming that may have occurred? [ninja]

Hah! I got sick but never chummed the water!
This was a great trip but I was glad when it was over.

The hogfish is one that is on my fish bucket list. Tasty weird looking fish

Glad ya had fun and sea sickness sucks. If you think you might go again try the scopalamine patches.

I used to use Dramamine back in the day. Just didn't think about it this time. But I might need to grab some before I go again.

I think we are right around the northern edge of hogfish range. They get more of them on the boats just south of us. Fall and winter is the best time to catch them on the all day (8-10 hour) trips. Live shrimp is the best bait.

When we were in the Keys in April, my nephew caught a (much smaller) hogfish, but the season was closed so we had to release.
