trailer registration

I am aware that a trailer under 16' in Wisconsin requires no registration. How does the Wisconsin law apply when crossing the state line into Iowa, or Minnesota?

Gary,

No problem in any other states. The registration is based on where the trailer lives NOT where it travels.

Not to hi-jack the thread. Does this also apply to boat registration? In MN, if you have a boat that is only used for duck hunting, it does not need to be registered. If I hunt it in WI, does it need to be registered?

Not sure about your boat registration, but I think that if you shoot ducks on the Wisconsin side of the river you need to leave your birds in Wisconsin :D

I think that you can use a boat in a state it is not registered in for a set amount of time not sure how long but you can drive a car through other states right? There used to be a lot of trailers in Minn that were "borrowed from a buddy in Wisc.", not that I would know anything first hand about that. Now Minn. has a one time registration for trailers which is a wonderful idea, no more lost trailer license plates on bad Wisc roads ;-).

I think the trailer reg has been answered, to Mark W re:boats not sure if this answered your question. If not, contact WI DNR and get a written option.

You must have a Wisconsin Certificate of Number (i.e. registration) and expiration decals to legally operate a recreational vessel legally. Exceptions to the requirement to register a recreational vessel include:
  • sailboats 12 feet of length or less and not equipped with a motor
  • sailboards
  • manually propelled vessels that are not equipped with a motor or sail
  • vessels registered in another state and using Wisconsin waters for less than 60 consecutive days.
