Tried crabbing Sat

After the CWA decoy outing, Meg & I headed down to the coast to try our hand at getting some blue crab. For those of you who have joined since the late 90's Meg is my daughter (Dani's age) who hunted with me a fair amount when she was in high school. Now that she's married and long moved out, getting together for an outing is a special treat. We took the sneakbox since we were flirting with low tide and mud banks, with the dodger folded down the broadbill takeoff made a nice platform for the two of us. I had two traps and we worked a number of hand lines all baited with chicken. Definite learning curve with what appeared to be fairly educated crabs. In addition to the crab we also trapped a fat eel and lifted turtles to the surface twice.

And now that Meg is through the first trimester, I guess it's safe to say that I'm going to be a grand parent by late winter.

Scott, Very nice, great way to spend some time again with your daughter! looks like a great meal too.

One trick for crabs that are trap and or line shy, try scapping them at night if the laws and visibility allow.

Here in NJ they come into the shallows to feed and you can wade with a net and headlamp and get those educated crabs.

Here's a pic from last week. (both over 8") These crabs never feed or move much in the day.

Thanks for the congrat's guys. Jode, thanks for the tip on scooping up the large guys in the shallows. George, there was plenty of Old Bay in the boil, along with some vinegar.

All the best guys!

That is nice news about your daughter! I don't much eat crabs, but I do like catching them. There is something about sitting with a handline and reeling them in, maybe it is the simplicity of it.
