Guys, before I tell the tale, I appologize for no pictures. Did a little video of it but no pix. Anyway, Went out for a little country tour 3 days ago with my lovely wife. Went up to the Snake river and while walking along a gravel road, decided to stroll down to rivers edge.
When we got close to the edge, mallards started jumping. I kept on walking closer and stepped out from behind a bush and there were 3 mallards and a widgeon, just litting there letting us get to 30 yards.
At that point I up and dropped the greenhead. The widgeon flies and it gets a load of #3's.
Knight, my lab. brings in the greenhead. Nice drake.
I sent him back for the widgeon and he brings back what appears to be a mallard hen. Then I see the white "shoulder" patches that I'd seen when it flew. The white and black lines above the speculum have a second white line and the feet are the size of a widgeon. So I'm calling it a mallard/widgeon hybrid.
My second hybrid so far. The first was a redhead/canvasback
Hope everyones season gets better as it closes. Ours appears over due to ice up.
