Gives the pups an escape area when the mama lays down. If one of them happens to be behind her when she lays to nurse, she can't lay close enough to the sidewall of the box to smother the pup.

Looks nice, you will probably want to increase the height, the monsters will be out in 2-3 weeks, higher on 3 sides with removable rails on the front works well, then a box on the outside to keep mom from "dragging" as she gets in
