who was Jane McCall

The story does not state that she was famous. The end of that story explains who she was: the wife of a Hollywood studio executive. Which for the Average American who is outside the LA social circles has no meaning. There is no fame in the story for anyone, only the great circle the double auto shotgun took.

A few minutes on IMDB does not produce much in the way of historic studio executives. Only recently have they started adding data on producers and directors. However, there are so many other positions withing a large corporation that this source would never document them. Nobody cares about the accountants until they embezzle the money.

Google does not even help.

It leads me to think that Mr. McCall is just another man lost to history or that it was a good story, but only story.

just read the story. A good one if true. Even better for me,as I have my grandfathers Double Auto and it was the first gun I used in the duck swamp.
Not as common as the auto 5 and wont hold as many shells but an easy gun to shoot due to the short recoil action.

Wasn't the double or even the "twelvette" subject to frequent hangups ?
Once had a B-2000 and it was a true "hangmaster". Never had trouble with my old 12 ga. A-5 as long as I had the friction ring on right for the load I was using. I did buy a 16 ga from a guy who brought it back from Germany after WWII. That gun hung up on me the first time I shot it on brand new Remington 2 3/4" shells. After some serious investigation I found out the gun was made to shoot 2 9/16" shells. The biggest success was the old A-5 action which I think was made first by Remington after they bought the JMB patent and sold as their Mdel 11. JMO and some hearsay.
Best,
Harry

There is a guy on the 16 gauge society web site who is trying to re-manufacture the double auto in 16 gauge. I think his plan is to open up some kind of manufacturing facility on standing rock indian reservation and make shotguns and ammunition

Here is a link to the articlehttp://www.wildfowlmag.com/destinations/WF_plain_200808/index.html

I just showed it to my dad who remembered the extra muzzle blast from the Cutt's compensator which included a full selection of screw chokes but was deafening to nearby blind mates.
I never had a hang with mine and I used it for both skeet, trap and ducks. I did have to fabricate a special tool to get at the recoil spring in the stock to keep it clean.

Later I found a mint solid rib barrel at a local shop with a fixed mod choke. That is the one I like the most now.
