Here is the limping wirehair -retrieving his first canada goose on land. Good news he quit limping on sunday after my post and all has been well. I have been taking it easy on him but we managed to work some birds and practice with the dog blind at the game farm last saturday, monday 9/ 22 was the last day of early season goose in Minnesota and I had an opportunity to hunt a high traffic field. This was the first field hunt I have taken him on.
The first goose, Rollie and I got busted walking back to the truck . Kinda funny, it was warm no birds flying 9 am rolls around , we have not seen a goose and I wanted to get a bottle of water from the truck. I say to my buddies “get ready I and going back to the truck and grab a bottle of water, that will bring the birds in. Sure enough a loaner comes flying in. Rollie and I both hit the deck about 200 yards from the decoys and blinds. My buddies managed to call him in and killed him. The bird fell Rollie waited for the fetch command, ran over and picked him up, retrieved him to hand-Just like a chukar at the game farm. It was pretty sweet watching the bird circle and listen to my buddies call , watching them flag- seeing the bird lock up and committed, seeing it fall from the sky and then hear the shots, Did,nt hurt that Rollie stayed down on the first down command waited for me to to give him the “ fetch it up” command, figured out how to pick up a goose and retrieved it to hand like a perfect gentleman.
The second bird was part of a pair of birds that came in . We called, flagged and called, they circle and circle but would not really commit. Then they came back within 30 yards over the blinds. Rollie stayed in his blind, shots were fired both birds fell out of sky. Out of the blind he flew and picked it up the first goose to hit the ground, my buddies lab grabbed the other- yeah he broke before I gave him the command but he waited patiently while we worked those geese. We shot a couple more geese and called her quits at 1 pm It was an awesome hunt -we killed 6 birds total -19 birds short of the limit for 5 guys. Needless to say its not always about killing your limit ( good thing because I would have quit hunting years ago-not for lack of blood thirst but of skill!) I am proud of my hound.
