Wood duck mud motor

I'm looking at getting a small mud motor for my rig this summer. My problem is, that where I have been hunting the water is kinda in short supply. I was wondering how one of their small motors would do. I have a 14ft Lowe and will probably be loading it with two 225lb people + gear. Also some areas the water is 6 to 0 inches. Didn't know if it would be enough powers or how they do in straight mud. Any direction on this matter would. Be appreciated

Chester,

I have a PPF Wood Duck motor. They are fine little motors but in my opinion it's to small for your application. I'll be using my motor on a Four Rivers marsh boat I just acquired. You didn't mention what size 14' you have. I have a Alumacraft 1442 that I ran a 13hp Beavertail last year and for me, my dog and gear it was ok. I would suggest a 16hp but then I didn't like how low the boat sat in the water with the 13hp. If your boat is a standard 1448 you should not have the problem I had. I hunted with a guy in Florida with a 23hp on a 1448. It was slow but we didn't have far to go to where we hunted.

I would definately go with a 23 hp ... Great power to weight ratio.. The 23 does weigh slightly more... But keep in mind the fuel tank on the 13 hp sits on top if the engine...with 2 gallons of fuel there is only about a 5 lb weight difference on the transom ...

I have a 13 on a 14 x36 .... I wish I had listened to warren coco and about 15 other people and gotten the 23
Also more of a "standard" size for parts as well.
Doing upgrades has been a major pain in the ass... For the 13 hp honda, and limited knowledge base big you have problems

I am in the process of modding my motor and having a custom 16x36 mud boat built from Louisiana

After messing around with a 9 hp go devil on aluminum riveted jon boats and non-mud boat hulls, I bought a go devil duck skiff and put a 16 hp long tail on it. Little mud motors are for little marsh boats and bigger mud motors work best on welded mud boat hulls.

The smaller mud motors are made to get small boats through shallow water, don't have the torque to push a big boat once it bottoms out.

Remember mud motors weight a lot, be careful, don't overload your 14' boat.

My buddy had a 16x54 Godevil boat with a 23 longtail. We could go just about anywhere but not anywhere fast. It was the fastest in about 8" of water (pressure wave, physics, blah, blah, blah...), we could get it up to about 14-16 mph loaded. In deeper water, we were lucky to do 12 mph.
But damn what a roomy stable shooting platform and with the slick bottom we could motor along in 0" water as long as it was sloppy mud.
