A Christmas Doe Using Old Stuff

Congratulations on a great hunt and the fine table fare! Thanks for sharing your story.

Bye Bye Filson, Hello Tom Beckbe (RANT!)

Sadly, this is very true! The same thing can be said for L.L. Bean, mostly geared toward the younger crowd that could care less about anything hunting related. Gander Mountain went the same direction after the bankruptcy, I don’t know if they even exist anymore. There are places like Beckbe...

    Small spread make up.

I’m in east central Missouri, small impoundments and occasionally smaller rivers. We have mallards, gadwalls, shovelers, teal, the occasional pintail. Geese are also common in the area. Back when I was actively hunting this area years ago it wasn’t uncommon to have some divers cruise the decoys.

    Small spread make up.

When I stopped duck hunting several years ago I got rid of most of my stuff so I’m slowly replacing things. Among the things I kept were a few decoys, around a half dozen, and I think all mallards. You guys that run small spreads hunting puddlers from layout boats, what do include. Species...

    Socks

I wear Rocky merino socks in boots for hunting and Smart Wool lite hikers for around town and dog walks! I have poor circulation in my feet and they are always cold so I also use the disposable toe warmers if it’s below 40 degrees or so.

    Anyone recognize this boat

I think you guys are right, I googled ice boat and it looks like that’s exactly what it is, right down to the “crutch” . Thanks for the info!

    Winter is here. Who’s hunting?

I went to 3 different spots that have been pretty productive in the past, I didn't see a single duck. The water levels in a couple of them were less than ideal but there should have been at least a few birds.

    Anyone recognize this boat

I I didn't see any provision for an oar either but it looks like there is something draped over the stern that may be hiding the hole. It's in Missouri, near St. Louis, I don't know about the red paint either but given the location I would think an ice boat would be unlikely.

    Anyone recognize this boat

My thought that the "crutch" was for some sort of rudder, the vise mount is anybody's guess. The asking price is cheap enough it might be worth a drive to see it. I would like to see some bow and stern pictures, I'll probably contact the seller and see if they can shed some light on it.

    Anyone recognize this boat

I found it pretty close to me, the price is right. I have no idea of the condition.

    Winter is here. Who’s hunting?

It’s 15 degrees here this morning and everything has a skim of ice. I’m going on a recon mission later to see if there’s any ducks around. I did see a few woodies a couple of weeks ago while deer hunting.
