    Wood for decoys

I think my experience echoes what a lot of others have said. I’m thinking cedar is easier for me to come across here in MD than it would be in Ohio. But I started with a few beams that were a very lucky facebook marketplace find. Then found 2x6s at an exotic lumber yard for a much higher price...

Hollow Cork Decoy "wall thickness" ?

Haven’t worked with much tan cork personally, so it’s hard for me to put a number on it. But I think your ability to judge the thickness, keep things even, not go through the back of the decoy may be more important than a specific width. I kept mine around 1”-1 1/4” and felt like that was very...

    Ward Worlds

I had a good time checking it out on Saturday. Felt like there may have been a few more entries than last year. The fish were pretty impressive as well.

Question For New Members (Joined 2020 or later for the purpose of this survey)

I believe I would have found it while googling fiberglass repair, trying to figure out more and more about how my duck wrangler was constructed. Like some others, I didn’t quite have a mentor for any part of waterfowling. So this forum has been a tremendous help.

    Round bottom decoys?

Makes me think of “upper bay” style decoys which are usually turned on a lathe, in this case, a round bottom seems necessary just to make them. They generally have some lead on the bottom, but no keel. They bob side to side a good bit, but probably self-right much easier than a solid body flat...

    When did it start

Thanks everyone, it’s been interesting to read how you guys got into carving. I’ve been at it for 3 years now. I had a really good starting point with a family that is very much into woodworking. But none that kept an interest in hunting. I think I wanted to carve almost as soon as I started...

Getting a boat off a trailer

I’ve had to do it before after my trailer got wrecked by a drunk driver, boat is a 15’ duck wrangler (boat thankfully didn’t take much damage). It took all the jacks, jack stands, and suitable blocks I could find, probably 5 jacks. But I moved the trailer out from under the boat and would take...

    New Members Please Introduce Yourselves

Hello, I haven’t posted much. But I started reading through the forum when looking up specifics about decoy carving and boat maintenance (currently have a 15’ duck wrangler). Aside from just looking up questions, I’ve found a lot of really interesting discussion on here. I live near Baltimore...

    Eye options

You could definitely paint them on if you wanted. I’ve heard of using rubber tube to get a clean circle. I think a fair amount of carvers have also used tacks or just omitted the eyes completely. Almost no wrong way to do it in my opinion.

    Long line weight ideas

I actually have a few set up with 5lb barbell weights on the side I drop first and a grapple anchor on the other. On rare occasion, the 5 lb weights didn’t hold (silty bottom, 7-20’ of water, Chesapeake bay) and it gets bumped up to 10, but usually no problem.

To Those That Participate on FB Duck Hunting Groups

I don’t believe I’ve actually posted here before, but honestly the constant marketing is a large part of why I dropped instagram (never really used Facebook) and mostly moved over to forums now. I’ve only been to the Easton Festival twice, but I did think this year was smaller than the last one.
