A couple of old waterfowl books

Books concerning things of interest to me are a passion of mine. I just "found" these two recently stashed away in my Man Room. Of course now I must read and study them from cover to cover (already started). If I recall I got them at the county fair in the Outdoor Building and placed them in a NY DEC tote bag. I've always enjoyed reading George Reiger's writing. Just thought I would share with others here that like to read.

I am 59 years young and just started duck hunting a couple years ago when I was diagnosed with Vasculitis in my lungs. My sheep hunting days were over so I bought a GWP and started bird hunting. Built two duck boats and have been buying duck hunting books ever since. Having never duck hunted, I have found that it is a steep learning curve but have enjoyed every minute. Just finished a book by MD Johnson called Waterfowling Beyond The Basics. Awesome book and would recommend it to anybody new to the sport.20220607_114334(0).jpg

Several members of this forum were featured in that book. Mark Rongers and Steve Sutton come to the top of my mind. There may have been more. I'll have to check my copy.
 
Eric, Now that you mention it, yes indeed. As long as we are on the subject of reading, the other day I was reading the history and beginnings of this forum and how it all started with your Devlin Scaup! Thank you for starting this forum as that is what pointed me in the right direction when I was trying to learn how to kill ducks. Like I tell my wife Heather, you can solve almost any problem with whiskey and the internet. P.S.Not long ago members from this forum used to get together in Wisconsin. You still do that?

I do not own that fine book - but have enjoyed it cover-to-cover!

Speaking of which...I have always loved the cover art:

For me it evokes the wonderful work - sometimes truly arduous and even dangerous - that we all accept and value as part of our Grand Passion. I get the same feeling from Homer's The Herring Net - which hangs over my favorite couch.

I'd love to see that article and will try and find a copy. I wasn't part of those WI gatherings but haven't heard of any recent ones. Over the years there have been numerous off-season gatherings and group hunts as well, but none as of late that I'm aware of. Thanks.

The artist is Mr. Joseph Fornelli. His work is outstanding he also illustrated the book.

During the 1980's Mr. Reiger and I corresponded about our passion for waterfowling and his writing as our mind set is very similar. We almost caught up to each other when we both hunted Lake Mattamuskeet with Bob Hester. As for Homer's The Herring Net, during a long discussion Jim Schmiedlin told me it was his favorite painting. He had a framed print of it at his home. No one can paint like Homer did, each time I view his work I see something new. Artists respect artists and are fueled by the work.


The library of books I've collected and read over the years is large. I have no idea how many books I have, nor do I want to. My daughter was just here for a visit. She was looking and reading some of my cook books while I cooked. I told her they will be all yours someday. She said "You have so many I won't want them all." Every once and awhile I wonder where all the books will go after I'm gone, to good homes I hope.

Since I was a child when I read something I liked or saw art that I liked I've tried to correspond with the writer and the artist (if alive). Surprisingly many returned my letters and phone calls and friendships were developed. I still have all the letters, postcards and announcements. Hard copy not like todays world of internet, texting, etc.

I need another book about the things I'm passionate about like I need to loose more hair on my head. Yet the inventory gets larger each year.

Steve, Yes, a number of folks from Wisconsin, Minnesota, Iowa and Illinois would get together in the summer at a couple of parks on Pool 8 of the Mississippi River - boats, decoys, dogs and families. It's been a number of years since the last one - I think we probably started in the early 2000's.

Sorry to read about your illness and being unable to sheep hunt. You took a positive approach to it with Bird Hunting & Waterfowling. Ya dove right in head first. I admire that. As ya well know book learning will only take ya so far. "On the job training" will get ya where ya need to be for learning the ropes and satisfaction. Sheep Hunters are Tuff MF's so you will do well as a waterfowler.

In my younger days I wanted to hunt Mountain Goats and Bighorn Sheep. I came close but No Cigar. Upland Birds & Waterfowl hunting took over my life. Fly fishing also and deer hunting for Food. I've slowed down in some regards and improved in others as the learning curve never ends. Being Out There is the most important thing for me now.

By the look of yer GWP say the word "Bird" and the coiled spring lets Go. Ya keep a tidy shop, and man that boat and trailer look first rate.

Thanks Pete. I own an apartment south of Door County. May have to make the drive up.

I believe back in the day, members gathered for a Pool 9 hunt for a number of years in a row.
And there was a Maine sea duck hunt at least 2 or 3 years.

I've hosted a Fri-Sun dove shoot/shindig for the last 5 years at my river property just north of Birmingham, AL in September. Been some excellent times had down there over the years. Had folks from many different states come hang out. The first year was a hoot. Had people from all over show up. Didn't get everyone in the first year pic, but here's some of us. I had never met most of these folks before that weekend. We had close to 30 people there. All from another duck forum. Notice that abundance of cargo shorts. Classy bunch. :ROFLMAO:🍻
