Last Week of the Season: Who's Hunting?

We've been frozen out in southern New Jersey for the past two weeks.

I was able to get a few walk in Hunts under my belt.

The ice has finally cleared and Saturday is our youth/veterans hunt. I'll either take someone for that. Or set up on the Bayshore for snows.
Well it wasn't gangbusters but I managed to find a few!

I had not hunted since Jan 2018 but a couple of friends hosted my son and I (we are both Vets) out for the youth, active duty mil or Vets hunt yesterday. Was a great day. In the last hunt for me in 2018 I had two Cans in my bag. First two birds for me yesterday were 2 Cans...not a double. We both took our birds which included Cans, Redhead, Mallard, greater Scaup, Lesser Scaup and Widgeons.
It was a great hunt with friends and my son. Hope my spark stays lit until fall so I go after them again after my 2568 day vacation from waterfowling.....but who was counting. IMG_9644.jpeg

Yesterday will probably be the last day of the season for me. I went to my favorite place, not necessarily the most productive area as of late, but the marsh is definitely my happy place. It was a beautiful day, high 20's to low 30's, light winds mostly cloudy skies. The geese were honking on the edges of the marsh, so I went lights out and navigated by the dim moonlight. I'm rather familiar with the area, so not a big deal. I ended up setting up about 100 yards from the spot I was thinking about, but really was all the same.
There was no waiting for the action to begin. Three minutes after LST, I had a short conversation with a lone goose, he put his landing gear down and I held out until he was a nice shot at 20 or less yard. After one shot, he stayed with me on the rapidly forming ice.
I missed on a passing trio at about 40 yards, but one goose is ok with me.
Now the long wait until the September early goose season. I have a few duck hunting related projects that I will begin as soon as I roll the duck boat out of "my side" of the garage and regain my work area. My first project is to weld up new and improved trailer light post/boat guide.

Last week of the season here in NW Pa.. Haven't seen much as it's been brutally cold. Snowing now with 3-5" expected. Couple guys hunted last week saw geese feeding in a corn field, set up the next day..........nada.. May or may not get out depending on my level of motivation.

If that's your house in the background...that's really cool. It would be a dream come true to hunt my own property.
Not my house, i was pulled for a off shore permit and the homeowner didnt want me messing up his sons hunting, so he agreed to let me hunt the shore line and his dock. Made a great friendship that hopefully lasts a long time

Last day for me to hunt, our Canada goose season ends tomorrow. Hunted yesterday as well and shot my first neck collar goose, truly a bird of a lifetime. Today we went out and had a feeling the birds would fly late due to the cold. Did pretty well for a mid morning hunt before work scratching out another band. Now time for snows!
