Just picked up this Higbee pondbox its very light it is 7ft 3 long and 3 feet wide. Im going to redo the shell racks get a new canvas breakwater and cockpit cover. Has anyone gunned out of them? How do you like them?
They must but we are fortunate for all the original Duck machine then higbee’s were all built in south jersey.Dang. These things must grown on vines in your area. Neat find.
Good morning, Bob - and Dave~Just picked up this Higbee pondbox its very light it is 7ft 3 long and 3 feet wide. Im going to redo the shell racks get a new canvas breakwater and cockpit cover. Has anyone gunned out of them? How do you like them?
Early on, before I opened the cockpit, I did use mine to gather decoys. Sat on the deck with a kayak paddle, it did not paddle well. It has chines, and a concave hull so it towed well, but did not paddle well, though did float me just fine.Good morning, Bob - and Dave~
Sweet little vessel! As you know, I draw a distinction between gunning boxes (coffins) and pond boxes. I have never built the latter - but did own one built to Zack Taylor's design many years ago. I never hunted it - just used it to tend my gaff sloop which was moored in Bellport Bay briefly.
At 7'3" LOA and 3' beam - your Higbee is close to some of the full-length coffins I have built. My coffins are 34 inches wide (at the chines). I am guessing from that foredeck - 21 inches? - that she will trim well fore and aft. So, I am wondering how stable she is athwartships.
I look forward to your sea trials!
All the best,
