First trip with pond boxes

This post is a followup of last month's canvas build for my current pond boxes. Yesterday was their maiden voyage this season. First photo is what they look like "naked". The others are on a salt marsh, you can see the spartina patens is especially short in this location. We backed up to a lone small clump of phragmites for a silhouette break. The canvas is covered with various salt marsh grass, the remainder of the boxes are covered with wrack gathered within a few feet of the setup. My buddy is in one of them, the ducks have no clue you're around. Gunner doesn't like to get in the mutt hut, but his color is just about perfect for a marsh and he sits dead still until he sees a splash or is sent. The ducks don't seem to mind him at all. It was slow yesterday, but we'll be back at it tomorrow. And yeah, I left the gun on the box while we got set up and posed for photos, so it's not pointed in a safe direction. Fortunately it was just taken out of the case, not yet loaded and the bolt's still open. Cringe worthy in a photo. No matter how old and experienced you are it's easy to forget.

Those holes in the bottom for your feet?
Yup. It's a little tight trying to get your feet vertical in an 11.5" interior. They also serve as drains, stand the box on end and out comes the water.

I just noticed, I titled this pond boxes instead of gunning coffins. These little guys are coffins, you can't use them to paddle around after the decoys. Not if you're sane at least.

Next up today/tomorrow, the 9' BBSB pond box maiden hunt. Unfortunately the spots the gunning coffins and pond box were made for are still frozen in. Lots of birds around though. This little box can be rowed about, as you can see in the photo of my buddy and his girl.

This is what the 9' pond box looks like on the job. This really was a quick 10 minute grassing job, time just got away from me. The ducks have not been flying the last few days, but I have no doubt this setup will do the trick. Gunner can't figure out why he has to pose for so many pictures.

Congrats on the fine job on your recent builds and putting them to work for you. I know you are feeling satisfaction that not enough hunters experience. Making and using your own gear puts a depth into the hunt that there is no substitute for. Manufactures of duck gear see these shop made projects and often incorporate aspects into their own products. But from experience I know what SJ felt hunting in his own coffin box Monday for the first time can't be bought.

My hat's off to you.

Thank you Eric. I'm gonna need more satisfaction soon however, in the way of a few birds. Or Gunner will go on strike. The season was very good until five days ago, then nothing. There are several big flocks of ducks (1,000+) within two miles of where I was, and I saw maybe 10 total with no contestants.
