The latest edition of the Field & Stream print journal has just been released. “A Bit of Heaven” is a ten page spread featuring a three day black duck hunt at an iconic bay house on Long Island’s south shore. Inspiration for the trip came from the 1980 classic story by Norman Strung: “Bayman’s Solstice”. The author, Ryan Chelius, returns to the original shack featured in Strung’s classic. The current owner and keeper of tradition, Ben Sohm explains his efforts and struggles to maintain the shack and the waterfowling culture he loves so much. Copies of the journal are available at Barnes & Noble and Tractor Supply or fieldandstream.com.

Congrats to you and your son. I take it this is a companion piece to the "On the Ebb" video F&S recently released.

Eric-
Thanks, the kudos all go to Ryan on both projects. The “Bayman’s Solstice” story may well be my favorite piece of outdoor literature. I treasure my original copy in Gray’s Sporting Journal from 1980. For years I had said that someone should write a story paying homage to Strung’s original piece centered around the bay house and duck hunting. Ryan pitched the idea to his bosses at F&S. They loved the concept and gave him the green light to run with it. Ryan had major help coordinating the trip from Anthony Babich, a member on this forum. Anthony accompanied Ryan on the trip along with my good friend Paul Castelli. Both are featured in photos and story. The photos by photographer Bryan Derballa were so good that they bumped the spread up to 10 pages. I think the folks on this forum will find it to be a great read.
Regards,
Tim C.
