Re-powering an AA BroadBill

Carl

Oh I don't know. Excessive power and speed, running before daylight, crowded waterways, stumps, racing to the spot, aggressive competitive behavior. Nah, perfectly safe activity.;)

I'm not a fan of HP restrictions, with the possible exception of something like 9.9 hp limit Maine puts on some lakes. This allows for trolliing under power, a tradition as old here on trout and salmon lakes as outboard motors. But FWIW trolling under oar or paddle power is just as effective and a whole lot quieter. There is a little cheating with people who tune up a 9.9 to 15 hp or so, but this does not defeat the purpose, which is keep traffic mostly at limited wake and slow speed. Setting limit at 25 hp is just asking for trouble. If you truly want to cut down on overcrowding, go to no motors, or allow motors only in marked navigation channels. One of the most popular hunting areas in Maine is headway speed only outside the marked channel, and I've seen the rule enforced on several occasions.

I use to own a 25 hp Johnson 2 stroke. They are easy to work on. I put new read valves and rebuilt the carb. Easy job. When I went to a new 4 stroke motor on my new boat. The major difference I noticed was how quiet the 4 strokes were. Not a big deal to some, but when running the mighty Ohio River in the morning and someone see's a log going to our favorite hunting spot. You can understand someone's voice. Old two stokes was very loud. I usually don't wear my hearing aids while hunting worried I would adjust my hat or something and they would fall in the river. So the reduced noise was a big factor to me. Of course if you get electric start, then you need a heavy battery too. Just my opinion.

Alright fine….. I did tune this 30hp to a 40hp with some mods…LOL but that is 100% correct I know guys that have really supped these 3 cyl up to crank out some amazing power. Probably easier to buy a 25hp sticker for the cowling for many
Yikes!!! Did my mechanic start this reckless mania way back in the last century - when my 9.9 was souped up to a whole 15?????
