Advise wanted on hunting with old english hammer double

Dale, I am not exactly certain when 2 3/4 shells were first offered. But they were made to hold 1 1/4 oz rather than the 1 oz of the 2 1/2 inch shells. But I am somewhat certain that they were offered in England by the 1890s? Perhaps before? The English were ahead of us in powerful shells...

Advise wanted on hunting with old english hammer double

Dale, Did some more checking. Looked at Guns International to see if they had any Hollis guns for sale. They had seven listed. And three of them had high prices! $8475, $6500, and $5850. Also noticed in viewing the photographs Hollis made some very high grades. So I am very puzzled why almost...

Advise wanted on hunting with old english hammer double

Dale, Did some research on your gun. Somewhat odd, as in the book British Gunmakers, Birmingham, Scotland & the Regions there wasn't a total history of the firm. Nor could I find out much from other books. It did list an amazing number of Hollis from Birmingham: Isaac, Ebenezer, Francis, Joseph...

    Call donation?

Want run the following past members of this site. A good friend, John Byers in Australia, collects duck calls. I have sent him all the old calls I had. Also Dave Smith and Duke LaVan have donated calls. I wonder if anyone else would like to do this? I am NOT talking about calls that have value...

Advise wanted on hunting with old english hammer double

Dale, Looks like you got a nice old gun. A plus is that it has been nitro proofed. That more or less means it is safe for modern shells. I would suggest low pressure ones! Also, many English 12 bores have 2 1/2 chambers. You need to check on that. If it does, then it is best to use just 2 1/2...

    Attn Brad Bortner

Brad, As I am certain you are aware several old time waterfowlers stated that there was no question that ducks have a sense of smell. I haven't seen that subject raised for many years. Any updates on the subject? One writer in the 1920s pointed out that since vultures have a keen sense of smell...

    Steve Sutton Memories

My good friendship with Steve came to a rather abrupt end. Can't remember the exact circumstances, but revolved around a heated dispute between Steve and Dave Hagerbaumer. That was followed by a donabrook between Steve and some key members of the Washington Brant Foundation, which was more than...

    W&C Scott 3 inch 12 bore

Derrell, Yes, the gun is entirely shootable. I have used it with steel for years. My wife will take photographs and we will get them to you. We will need your email address. Some more about the gun: It is a backaction sidelock. Those are noted as being the strongest of actions. After being in...

    W&C Scott 3 inch 12 bore

Due to age and declining health my wife and I are moving into a retirement center likely as soon as next year. I am starting to downsize all my stuff. I am giving most of my guns, all art, books, and decoys to Delta to be sold and the money used toward a wetland. They are going to send someone...

    Attn Brad Bortner

Brad, Thanks for your reply. However, I have to question your "they don't belong here" remark. Do you feel the same way about pheasants, chukars, and gray partridge? To a degree, they don't belong here either. Then there is the matter that the ODFW rules the Eurasian as a exotic, therefore no...

    Attn Brad Bortner

Brad, I want to run something past you. For the past few years I have been in a small war with Brandon Reishus at the ODFW regarding the Eurasian collared dove in Oregon. I strongly think it should be a game bird with a season and limit. He doesn't. My reason is that wing shooters in western...

    Shotgun of Choice?

Eric, Actually that first W&C Scott had been converted from a 10 to a 12 when I purchased it. I liked it and decided to get other old 10s for the same purpose. All of them, except one, had damascus barrels. That just about ruled out using modern loads, and especially steel. Along with that a 10...

    Shotgun of Choice?

Eric, Yes, I do use the gun at times during the season. It is a good old friend. It is a W&C Scott backaction sidelock, made before Scott and Webley merged in 1897. Those backactions were noted a being the strongest of all actions. It was also the first 10 bore I had that had been sleeved and...

    Shotgun of Choice?

Was hoping that someone would include doubles in their favorite gun or guns. I have several that I shoot for waterfowl, but the one I like best is a Charles Boswell 3 inch 12 bore with 32 inch barrels. It was made in 1912. A very good gun and adds to the day by just looking at it.
