On the hunt in the NJ marsh

Day two... less fog and wind, still not many ducks flying.

On the hunt in the NJ marsh

Well the wind changed direction so we picked up to try another spot. When we got there we didn't like the conditions so we packed it in. We saw mostly Buffleheads and Brant. Fog made visibility really tough. Hoping for better luck tomorrow!

On the hunt in the NJ marsh

The wind has died off and the fog has gotten thicker. Hunting is slow, slow enough that we can indulge in a duck blind delicacy!

On the hunt in the NJ marsh

Slow ride out due to the fog. But the brant cooperated right away!

On the hunt in the NJ marsh

I arrived at our lodgings earlier this afternoon, my brother has been here since Saturday morning. He managed 1 brant, 1 bufflehead, 1 black duck, and two redheads before a nasty cut on the foot of one of his two drahthaars ended his hunt early and required a trip to the vet for stitches...

    Lucky sonsabitches!

By the smiles on his face in the photo with the banded Brant and while running the boat, that boy is 100% hooked for life! Congrats on a couple of awesome hunts! Do you decoy many Black Ducks into those rocky areas?

    Jersey Salt Marsh - 2019

That is a moral victory in my book any day! More often than not a 30 yard flaring pass is the best look I get on Black ducks. Great pics and story, thanks for sharing. Who makes the Bufflehead and Black duck decoys in your pics?

    What a pussy....

In my brothers duck hunting boat we have 2 xl Mr. Buddy heaters. They are glorious things, beacons of hope in the cold wet world of winter waterfowl hunting. Great for warming hands and wet dogs, or grilling up a hot dog on a toasted roll. Still by the last week or two of the season I always...

Not fun being on the news....dog almost died

I can't imagine how it felt to stand there helpless while your dog was in the truck. Hoping for a speedy recovery! We all like to think that we can rush into the water in a situation like that but the truth is our bodies just aren't meant to handle the cold water and it could very likely end...

    Classic Duck Hunting Destinations

Chesapeake Bay/Eastern Shore of Maryland, late season Bluebills and Canvasbacks. My brother and I used to do this every year and always enjoyed it. Historically, life there centered on the water and for many people it still does. Crabbing, Fishing, Oysters, and duck hunting/market hunting are...

    December workbench

Steve, first I want to thank you for the tutorials on your website, the paint colors in particular were a great help lately. I've just never been good at bending acrylics. Secondly I find the repair/refurbishing/restoration work you're doing on decoys fascinating! Great job keeping the...

    A Beautiful Saturday....

In typical fashion getting to bed early Friday night didn't go as planned. After finally getting to bed around 10:30, it seemed like a literal instant when my 1:15am alarm went off. 30 mins and I was on the road, to meet at my brothers house and at 2:45 am we were on our way South East to a...

    December workbench

It's been a very long time since I had anything to contribute to the workbench thread. This one has been staring at me from a shelf un-painted for almost 6 years. It was meant to be a companion to the drake mallard in the second photo but I just never got around too it. Paint colors are...

    School is still in session

My brother and I are also new to the NJ coastal marshes. This is our 4th year doing it, and we keep learning. Wind, tide, current, shifting bottom, etc. Lots of stuff to take into consideration. Lots of fun too! Plenty of screw ups, and misadventures, and a few times sitting high and dry...

    Snow geese

I grew up between Hazleton and Mountain top. Drums was the name of the town. Back then if you blinked at the wrong time you'd pass right by and not even know you missed it.
