Nice Tim. Nothing like a shave horse for holding blanks.

    LC Smith Long Range Questions

Eric I hope you enjoy them. I still take my Uncle's L.C. Smith (192o era I believe) and Parker (1903 era) out hunting once a year. My Uncle had the chokes opened years ago and they were his daily shooters. The sentimental value exceeds the retail value to me. I shoot bismuth through them but...

    Duck Harvest By County.

David, I hope the discussion wasn't too confusing since I was hoping to clarify issues. LOL. It is a complex world to get what appears to be simple questions, "how many migratory bird hunters are there" and "How many birds did they harvest". But the system doesn't allow for simple answers...

Restrictions on Hunter Harvested Wild Bird Game Meat from Canada

Dave, as far as I know there is no precedence issue. Both are in effect and I assume will be enforced. That effectively makes it impossible to bring hunter harvested game birds back from Canada. I am hoping someone sees the error of their ways soon.

Restrictions on Hunter Harvested Wild Bird Game Meat from Canada

Dave, keep your day job. Yes the regulations are now in conflict. My point was the USDA regulation is going to be completely ineffective and is unnecessary. You may not agree but some regulations are useful. Some.

Restrictions on Hunter Harvested Wild Bird Game Meat from Canada

Dave, game bird meat processed in Canada would meet the USDA importation requirement but would not meet the USFWS importation requirement. I don?t know if there are enough Canadian butchers taking gamebirds to meet the demand. However, I fail to see the need for the USDA order. There is little...

Restrictions on Hunter Harvested Wild Bird Game Meat from Canada

USDA dropped this at 6:30 pm on Friday evening before a long weekend after the seasons had started in Canada with US hunters already harvesting birds. Ducks Unlimited and Delta Waterfowl have already expressed their concern. I hope this does not stand but it?ll be a battle against a powerful...

    Duck Harvest By County.

Several of my colleagues have given talks to various fisheries management groups about how the migratory bird management world works. The big elephant in the room is the role of commercial interests. The Magnuson-Stevens Act also.

Yep. No migratory bird hunting in Hawaii. But they do have upland bird hunting Our system of Government is based on states

    Duck Harvest By County.

Jeff, almost exactly the same issue. There are 49 states with migratory bird hunting seasons and at least 49 different approaches to selling hunting licenses. HIP is free in some states while others charge a small fee. Even a small fee is a hot topic in some states. HIP is also called...

    Duck Harvest By County.

Vince, glad you enjoyed the article. Actually it?s a complex question. So what number do you want? The number of unique people who hunt waterfowl in the US? Every 5 years the USFWS has the Census Bureau to conduct a survey of hunting in the US and they estimate the number of migratory bird...

    Duck Harvest By County.

Jeff, estimates are from the county were the hunter reported harvesting birds, not the county of their residence. Some of those Northwoods counties are pretty large and mostly indurstrial forestlands but there might be some pockets of black duck hunters up there. The other thing I?ll mention...

    Duck Harvest By County.

Well I hope you enjoyed the article at least [;)]. I put the map in the article because I wanted hunters to see how their data is used and to have some fun looking and comparing counties within their states and across the country. There are lots of surprises in that map but the comparisons...

Duck Numbers Not Like I hoped

Richard I'm not sure if I fully understand your question. Populations fluctuate for a variety of reasons but the amount and quality of habitat is probably the most important determinant of the size of populations. Loss of habitat leads to smaller populations typically due to increased...

Duck Numbers Not Like I hoped

Eric et al., I'll be blunt. There is little basis for it from a population management standpoint. The mallard hen restriction is vestigial, carried over because no one wants to deal with the political/social costs of making the change. Its been in place so long that duck hunting "tradition"...

Duck Numbers Not Like I hoped

Tony, that is the differences between the 4 flyways, Atlantic, Mississippi, Central and Pacific. It all goes back to how many ducks, hunters and habitat there is in each flyway. The formula was carved in stone tablets found in a Louisiana bayou and guarded by water moccasins and big gators...

Duck Numbers Not Like I hoped

Eric These changes in season setting happened on my watch mainly because the red tape processes in federal and state governments happen too slowly anymore. There were a couple of years when seasons almost occurred before state or federal regulations were published. We also came to realize...

Duck Numbers Not Like I hoped

Howdy folks, been away from duck boats.net for a few months on all sorts of projects. I'll update you soon. Yes, FWS and flyways agreed to change the timing of regulations publication a few years ago. They now set the regulations a year in advance instead of the same year. They did...
