    SBDB - Home Stretch....Grassing

Steve, I don't have any pictures of the flag, but it is nothing fancy. Originally I had custom fitted fluorescent and reflective covers made by Mom for the 15hp motor and the Dodge and Krowl Ice Scooter. When I got the Scaup, the cover still fit the 25hp, with some added webbing to the straps...

    SBDB - Home Stretch....Grassing

I know Salt Hay is traditional on a South Bay Duck Boat, but where I will hunt is fresh/brackish water, and out East on the salt marsh. But even out east, the areas we hunt are varied backgrounds, not pure meadow. So, I determined to start this yr with a mix of materials. I bought some...

    Fiberglassing process

Scott, get yourself a copy of Sam Devlin's Stitch and Glue boat building. You will be doing a build up of internall filleting, followed by glass taping inside. It is not a single tape of the seam. Check out Eric's build on this site starting with the Stitching at a minimum and follow it...

South Bay Duck Boat -Blind ground rule #1 recovered.

I removed the block that was preventing the hard cover from fitting. I am noodling out an alternative that does not infringe on the internal width for the occasions I want to have the rear flaps inboard.

The Outlaw Gunnner, book by Harry M. Walsh M. D.

I have a signed copy. The first Easton Waterfowl Shop I attended, Dr. Walsh spoke at the theather across from the Tidewater. Loved the way he said "De Coys".

South Bay Duck Boat -Blind ground rule #1 recovered.

Well, I decided to set the hard cover on and install some strap eyes to secure it for roadtrips.... and it will not fit! The extra blocks I added to allow the rear flaps to mount inboard for solo hunts are just too tight. I might be able to trim the cover just enough to make it fit, but hate...

12ft shoving oar on a 14ft hull - solution performed.

Capt., Brian Garman suggested the same.... I just hated to compromise the vintage oar. It is not a turned shaft, it has been shaped by hand, and the profile would be a real challenge to try to sleeve.

12ft shoving oar on a 14ft hull - solution performed.

Well, I charged ahead... picked up a plumbing fitting from Home Depot and made it fit. Epoxied and screwed it in place. Then opened a hole in the back of the blind for the blade. I will only engage this when motoring or when all set up and hunting so the oar is out of the...

12ft shoving oar on a 14ft hull - solution performed.

With the SBDB I bought came a beautiful 12ft shoving oar, and a 12ft pushpole with Herters foot. I soaked both spars in BLO and would like to use at least the shoving oar. I will build a spot on the trailer to haul the oar when trailering but stowing it on the hull during the hunt is a...

South Bay Duck Boat -Blind ground rule #1 recovered.

Roy, my Mom looks forward to our projects.... brings back old times with all the schemes I have come up with over the many years. Tough on her machine, good thing it is a good one. I am sure I could figure it out myself, but as long as she is willing and able, she will have a part in my boat...

South Bay Duck Boat -Blind ground rule #1 recovered.

Rich, I intend to put the decoys inside, and maybe on the foredeck. I usually use less than 18 decoys with the small boat. If we switch over to Brant, then I can run back to the truck and switch out. This hull feels much larger than my BBSB. Though I have not loaded it with decoys yet...

South Bay Duck Boat -Blind ground rule #1 recovered.

OK, now I really must focus on decoys, as I am so far behind. It will be not stop decoys until it is time to grass up.

South Bay Duck Boat -Blind ground rule #1 recovered.

Yesterday, I spent the day with Mom, my personal canvas maker. I did not tow the boat up this time, as the project was smaller, and I figured I had it all measured and laid out well. Of course, I was off a little... but certainly close enough for a duck boat! I had allowed too much...

South Bay Duck Boat -Blind ground rule #1 recovered.

Rich, I have had the motor since 2010, so it is not new per se, but still looked quite new. The canvas cover my Mom sewn for me was kind of a "mullet" fit the cowling, and hung down along the drive. Over the years I shortened it a couple times, and now with the painted motor, and being better...

South Bay Duck Boat -Blind ground rule #1 recovered.

I bought this motor, with Mike Braden's help, new in the box, out of Arkansas somewhere. It is a 2009, October build, just before the 2010 EPA tightening that mostly eliminated the 2 strokes. I have been using a canvas cover that my Mom sewn for me to grass it up and hide it. The cover drags...

South Bay Duck Boat -Blind ground rule #1 recovered.

Rich, I hear you.... I have done as you suggested on both my BBSB and the Scaup and have been quite pleased with the functionality. That said, on this build I wanted to go simpler. When we hunt Chincoteague, we usually are the only boats at the launch, and get up the creek within 15 or 20...

South Bay Duck Boat -Blind ground rule #1 recovered.

Paul, yes. We hunt Chincoteague, and I hope to hunt LI and NJ out of it too. Any concerns with my build with respect to salt water?

    How would I do this?

Real cheap and easy, longer axle, hose clamp or cable clamp it to the existing axle at least 3 locations. I would do it at 4, on either side of the center weld, and then at the ends of the existing axle. If you find the weight is too great, and you need to add a truss support outboard to the...

South Bay Duck Boat -Blind ground rule #1 recovered.

Rich, I have not figured out how/where I will mount the poles yet. It may include a hole through the front shield and a hook on the inside rear of the fixed portion of the blind, but I am not decided yet. Do you have some suggestions?
