    Decoy history

Tom has a really key point about the population centers, and the markets. Here in Louisiana, as in coastal Florida, hurricanes have destroyed a lot of historic decoys when the storm surge has pulled them out to sea. Clint

    Sleeping Scaup

You need to keep in mind that with a photographer there, they ar not likely to sleep. Also, they generally sleep in short bouts and then scan for predators.....they wouldn't last very long if they slept for more than a few minutes at a time. Clint

    Fun friday

Ya feed them Mazuri Seaduck Chow. They keep them on a high-volume circulation pond, and move them in an airconditioned room during the hottest part of summer. Jacob said they don't have any problems, although the long-tails didn't do too well. They have Spectacled, King, 3 subspecies of common...

    Australian waterfowling

Worth, Do you ever get any musk ducks or pink-ears? I saw the pink-ears in the photos. What about pygmy geese or Australian wood ducks? All white-eyes are cool birds! Clint

    flattie decoys

If you watch divers when they are feeding, they force the air from their feather before diving to reduce their bouyancy. When they do this, they float a lot lower in the water, much like a flattie. Bunching flatties give the appearance of a group of foaraging birds surrounded by loafing birds...

Nice time to be on Gulf Barrier Islands...

TimJ...learn your willet bio....eastern willets nest along the Gulf and Atlantic coasts, so it was an eastern willet...also related to the smaller body size....I argue with most of the birders about how many eastern vs western willets winter in Louisiana....Florida, almost all wintering birds I...

Nice time to be on Gulf Barrier Islands...

Funny you mention and eskimo....thought I had one a few weeks back. Strange bird....brown, right size, smallish bill...when it finally took off, I concluded it was a baby willet...meaning like barely able to fly...poorly marked wings...but certainly not an eskimo....need more decoys to bring one...

Nice time to be on Gulf Barrier Islands...

Brad, One has to respond to where the funding is. The project is in response to a restoration project set to start next year. May have a similar project starting in Mississippi soon. Seems like I spend all my time on shorebirds and secretive marsh birds than I do with waterfowl now a...

Nice time to be on Gulf Barrier Islands...

We're going out next week and taking the night vision scopes to try to get some nocturnal observations so we'll camp on the island. I imagine we'll start picking up some scaup and mergansers then. Have a few specks showing up around the house, but it's turned dry again, so the fields are being...

Nice time to be on Gulf Barrier Islands...

We're doing shorebird surveys on the Isle Deniere chain. In the last couple of weeks, we've had a large influx of birds. The short-billed dowitchers, western sandpipers, black-bellied plover and semi-palmated plovers have all shown up in good numbers. Also, the white pelicans have returned and...
