I only shoot a lot of birds because I have an illness that makes me hunt all the damn time! After running all over the state yesterday for a handful of birds I need to start reigning myself in until we get some weather.

Hearing the same thing from my del bay friends as you Greg. We seemed to have the most birds around by my house (central coast) in between the coastal splits. Then they all left. Puddle duck-wise at least. Big difference from last year with the extended cold we had.

Of course I remember you, although I do get a lot of the "I know you from the internet" conversations at ramps and wawas early in the morning these days... I'd also know that ramp in the pic just from the blocks that make it up [;)] I haven't hunted that side at all this season.

Grinding it out down here in South Jersey logging some miles for few birds lately. Located some sorta rare for us shovelers on Friday and had a fun shoot with some real prime specimens mixed in. Going to keep the nicest one in the freezer for a future puddle duck slam dead mount. I guess...

Question for the Duck boss (and similar style boats) owners that have flapper boards

On the duck boss they shoot over the boards, on the roy boat he has a quick release on one side so it slides out when the flapper drops.

Question for the Duck boss (and similar style boats) owners that have flapper boards

I don't use a rear cover on my Schellinger but friends with duck bosses and another buddy with a high box use bungees with a piece of netting that they either tie raffia or salt hay on. I have been busted a few times in the exact situation you describe though.

^^^ you just wanted flapper boards like your buddy to the right in that pic! [;)]

Minimal calling for black ducks, especially on the coast. 90% of the time I just use a mallard drake whistle as a confidence call. Of course it depends on the day and the bird as well, singles are typically easier to convince to pay a visit to the spread than pairs and groups, less eyes to...

    The quest continues

Very hard to fool south jersey black ducks on a still, relatively warm day like Friday. I've seen plenty flare at live birds, let alone decoys and a boat. Sometimes there's not much you can do, but there's some great tips in the answers above. Here's one I've learned over the years... have...

    Winter project thoughts....

Here's a 2009. My measurements are about the same as above, short shaft transom.

    Thankful for Concealment

Haha my other gun is camo, but that ones my black cerakoted SBE. Of course before that I was very old school shooting my over/under out of a glass over cedar sneakbox. By the time they see the gun it's too late [cool]

    Facemask and glasses

I use a lightweight sun buff as a facemask most of the time. I have a heavier fleece one, but I find this one helps both with concealment and keeping my face warm and it is very thin since it's designed as sun protection in tropical areas. Naturally you can order them in a million colors and...

    Thankful for Concealment

I was able to use some vacation time this past week coupled with the holiday to get out four days in a row here in NJ as our second splits got going in earnest. Got to hunt with some friends and family which is always a bonus. Of course one thing to be thankful for is a boat that hides well...

    Robert is in Jersey !!

Robert is on his way to Virginia as of this afternoon. We did get out one more time before he had to go as I hunted Saturday morning. Crowds were pretty ridiculous, but I was able to get a little corner of a creek to myself. The wood ducks were plentiful and after some spotty shooting on my...

    Robert is in Jersey !!

Robert brought me a little bit of luck for our last day of first split for coastal yesterday. Only had two birds come in before I had to get to work, but connected on both, a hen pintail and big drake hybrid black/mallard. Looking forward to our south zone re-opener this weekend and then...

    Robert is in Jersey !!

Day one in the field with Robert in NJ Our coastal zone first split and north zone second split (along with small game) opened Saturday. Knowing the coast would be the most popular option I opted to hunt the north zone with my dad (on his birthday no less) and my friend Tom. Tom had...

    Robert is in Jersey !!

Safe and sound at my house a mere quarter mile from the hotbed of waterfowling that is Barnegat Bay... Looking forward to Saturday for our North Zone second split opener and Coastal Zone opener.

    Traveling decoy update

Looking forward to receiving him! We've been closed here in NJ for a few weeks so should be right in time for our NZ re-opener and Coastal first split.

    I think it hides

Looks really great! It always throws me through a loop to see pictures of folks gunning where you don't have to worry about tide! Although I guess the water levels do fluctuate quite a bit regardless.
