    Scaup, Brant, and Gadwall Notes

A couple of times a week during waterfowl hunting season I try to check Narragansett Bay from a high vantage point with binoculars. So far this season I've yet to see a single brant. I may have seen a small flock of scaup (our bluebills), but it was hard to get a positive ID since they were...

    The Long hunt (stranded overnight)

Outstanding read. Thanks for taking the time to write it. Hope to see if published some day soon

    Killing Cripples Quickly and Humanely

Hunted yesterday with bismuth shot (for the first time). When I was cleaning the birds we harvested I noticed a small piece of shot in one of them (much smaller than the intact pellets I found). So it did appear to break apart.

    Thanks Steve Sanford

For your generosity and the help you freely provided that enabled me to construct this situp blind. It works wonderfully (the ducks are from yesterday's outing, in which another hunter and I who hunted from the boat had a blast)

Sometimes you just have to shake your head in disgust...

Kind of wondering if the person was in such a hurry to get to a good hunting spot that her or she absentmindedly forgot to park the truck and trailer, and just headed out. I could especally see this happening if they were late. Keep in mind that many people have accidentally left children in...

Happy to report I finally began constructing the Steve-Sanford-Style situp blind similar (almost identical) to the one depicted in this thread. If Steve S reads this I'm hoping he can recall whether he put any type of horizontal piece at the bottom of the port and starboard luan sheets to...

Thanks, Steve & Phil for the additional info. I'm really hoping this works out. Several times last season, after sitting on the floor of the boat all day I had intense leg cramps in the night. Guess I'm getting older. Also hoping to be able to hunt 2 folks out of my duckboat, and this is...

    blind dimensions

Steve, After 4 years of mulling over this, I've decided to try to construct one of the sit-up blinds you posted about in this thread. Would you mind answering the following 2 questions if you remember: (1) what species and size wood did you use for the upright 4 corner posts? (2) Did you...

What is in your bag? January 2021

It has been a good brant season. Either I have no culinary discernment, or Rhode Island's brant taste halfway decent. The one I ate back in December was tougher than a puddle duck, but only slightly less flavorful. Haven't eaten this one yet

Outer Banks Trip 2020 and a Pilgrimage to the Home of Robert Ruark

Thanks for sharing your experience and photos. I'm really looking forward to the Robert Ruark installation. Also want you to know that learning somebody went o-for on 2 guided hunts helped ease the disappointment I experienced at the poor 2nd half of a season I had.

    New Wood Duck Project

Great work, Anthony, and thanks for sharing this post. I've been wanting to do something like this for years, but so far that's as far as I've gotten. If anything ever motivates me enough to get off my butt and to actually get some of these done, it will probably be your wood duck box project...

Slowest Duck Season Ever, But Beautiful Scenery

Here in Rhode Island the season started out great, then the ducks seemed to disappear. Pretty sure it's weather related. Some of the garlic I planted at the beginning of November has sprouted and is about 3 inches high. Not sure if I've ever had that happen to such an extent at this time of...

SEA TRIALS - and subsequent refinements - VanSant Sneakbox

Kind of curious whether you also painted the dodger (the color sure matches well). If so, did you have to thin the paint first or do some other type of prep? I have special motivation for asking, as I'm considering going with that color on my boat, but the current dodger color is tan. Thanks...

    New Trout Stream

Interesting coincidence that this popped up today. Yesterday I got bored and started poking around the internet for info about trout here in Rhode Island. In doing so, I stumbled upon a publication put out by the state back in I think 1916 that indicated in those days they stocked a similar...

    60 new wood duck boxes

Nice. One of these days I really want to get going on doing this. Probably just too much inertia so far. Likely the smart thing for me to do is try to find somebody locally who is already doing it and to seek to learn from them. In any case, know that you are helping inspire me.
