    Gruesome Discovery

Eric, tough way to spend a day off, but at least the family can put it behind them now. This is certainly a grim reminder about how dangerous our pastime can be and how important it is to be careful and have the right gear (pdf, walking stick, etc....). And I know a lot of people like to...

    New boat build

Well, since you have 6 or 8 sheets of ply scarfed, I'll assume it's not a Devlin Broadbill (unless you are making a fleet)!

    New boat build

Phil, Great idea doing the scarfing outside; ought to make cleanup a lot easier! Sorry I forgot, but, what did you decide to build? Looking forward to seeing it come together. -Bill

12V rechargeable battery - to lithium or not to lithium

Jay, Did the same on by Devlin Broadbill. After looking at the difference in power use between LED and regular bulbs, I switched to LED for running lights and this battery; should have plenty of power for multiple trips. v/r Bill

Converting a manual start outboard to electric - Yamaha F40

Tod, Great question, and I'm enjoying watching the tread. Every now and then I'll check out "kits" on Ebay to convert my 25hp yamaha 2-stroke to starter; there have been a few takeoffs from older used motors and perhaps some Chinese clone new parts sets. The kits usually contain harness...

    Devlin Broadbill and material selection

Hi Ed. Broadbill is a great little boat for solo hunting. You can use 1/4", or as Eric said 3/8. You might leave a lot of scrap on the ground if you build with both (if that is a concern). I built my Broadbill to plans and only needed 3 sheets 1/4 for hull/sides/deck (you have to be careful...

    Quick Release Snap Swivals

Jim, Will 5" work? I believe the snap is 5" and the swivel 1" for 6" total. If so, Atlantic and Gulf (atagulf.com). They work great for droppers on long lines. v/r Bill

Cackler Saga continues..... Combing and Sheathing Deck

Cackler Saga continues, Combing and Glassing All, Good evening. Am done getting ready to recon for ducks tomorrow (Alabama opens next weekend), so I though I'd continue on with the posts on the Cackler build. After the deck edges and combing were properly rounded and all the...

Cackler Saga continues..... Combing and Sheathing Deck

All, Good evening. Continuing on with the build, right after we had the engine installed it we decided to deck the area between the motor mount and the rear bulkhead. It really took having the engine in place to make it easy to visualize. While not in the plans, decking this area should...

    The Cackler Saga Continues... Decking

Tod, Thanks- glad to hear the overhang helps in rough water.

    The Cackler Saga Continues... Decking

Dave, Wedges were not shown in the plans or defined, however, I have an email from Sam that suggested 3 inch deep, 3/8 inch high, and 10 inch long. I ran from outer edge to inside of bilge keels as I think the dimensions were a "good estimate", especially since I altered the hull dimension...

    The Cackler Saga Continues... Decking

Tod, Thanks. The Tohatsu seamed like a logical choice due to weight. Have a good evening, Bill

    The Cackler Saga Continues... Decking

Eric, Must be the angle of the camera shot, the overhang on the deck is there. The two extra pieces of 3/8 are already epoxied in place and flush cut with a router in that pic. You can see the overhang and rough arc in the first pic in the post where the deck is not yet epoxied/screwed down...

    The Cackler Saga Continues... Decking

All, Good afternoon. Hope all the folks up north are getting to hunt this weekend; we?re still waiting for end of Nov to start season. Continuing on with the build, the next step was to make sure all the mating surfaces where the deck attached to the bulkheads, sides, and shear...

    The Cackler Saga Continues...

Hi Eric, Plans called for deck plates to access the cavities to install PFDs for floatation and air them out in the off season. We originally were going to go that way, but I started overthinking and really did not want that much air space in there as it could be displaced by water. Thought...

    The Cackler Saga Continues...

All, Good evening. It?s been a while since I provided an update on the Cackler build progress. I apologize for not keeping up as the boat was being built- all I can say is no excuse and I hope to finish up posting the build over the next couple weeks. Last update we were getting it ready...
