Looks Like I am heading South for the Winter to Stay

I'm in Lafayette, which is a fair distance, but if you're headed this way sometime, let me know. Right now, my gigs for geese are kinda up in the air. If they get worked out you're more than welcome to come down for a goose hunt. Clint

    So Steve....

Ryan, Has NOTHING to do with blood flow. Ducks have a counter-current blood flow through the legs to reduce heat loss. It's all hormonal. Clint

    So Steve....

You might find this site from one of Rick's students interesting. Because the base paper hasn't been published yet, I haven't had any chance to read it and evaluate the basis for their predictions, but seems reasonable. http://www.cfr.msstate.edu/kennedychair/weather.asp Clint

While we wait for the ducks to decide to migrate...

Steve, Red Data list endangered means less than 10,000 individuals. They don't seem to differentiate between breeders or pairs. I'ver tried to argue that the breeding component should be included (i.e. population dynamics are VERY different for 10,000 blue-winged teal when compared with...

While we wait for the ducks to decide to migrate...

Probably was a spoonbill, and you have the photos! Speaking of spoonbills, things aren't looking too well for them. They';re been changed to endnagered, and the Yellow Sea project isn't going to help for sure! Clint

While we wait for the ducks to decide to migrate...

My guess would be westerns and the falcon as a peregrine (merlin was my first thought, but relative to the size of a western, morelikely a perigrine).. Clint

What do the mallards eat in your part of the world?

I don't need it because I'll win... Clint

What do the mallards eat in your part of the world?

DJ, Vegas has it 10:1 that a mallard WOULD not change food habits IF a shad kill of 1-2 in shad died and formed windrows they could feed on, that they would NOT change their field feeding habits. I Put $1,000,000,000 on that, and I will be able to retire! We are not talking about anything...

What do the mallards eat in your part of the world?

Eric, I wouldn't expect drakes to have food habits much different from the hens. The drake is following the hen after pairing. Time budgets differ somewhat with hens foraging more and drakes spending more time alert, presumably to allow the hen to forage more, but if the food is easily...

What do the mallards eat in your part of the world?

Eric, Mallard hens tend to shift to a diet with more protein starting with the pre-basic molt in January. It's thought that they are starting to increase protein and calcium intake in preparation for nesting. So the shad use would appear to be a function of both availability and a need for...

What do the mallards eat in your part of the world?

Well, given that white-tailed deer are a major predator on songbird nests, and I had a jack rabbit that LOVED young pigeons, what we may consider the norm is often wrong. Think about it, YOU are considered a herbivore, but YOU find this nice chunk of protein YOU don't have to work to catch. ARE...

If you had power, what laws would you change?

Hey Tim, "I think we need a point system. It kept my mind in shape remembering what order I shot the ducks in. wink wink :-) ' Didn't ya just finish a few years of a new form of the point system?? Sorry, couldn't resist! Clint

HMM, because so many like spinners...

Goosy, You wouldn't come down for the driven coot shoot! They've stopped doing them because too many people were coming (like about 600 the last year). Wish they'd start agian. How ya been? Clint

If you had power, what laws would you change?

Mark, Why don't you tell me a little history about the use of live decoys? You wanted to hear stories from someone who has used then in North America? You seem to have no clue as to when they were outlawed or why. Would you please show me why they were "eventually" outlawed? Maybe habitat...

If you had power, what laws would you change?

That really was my point. I wonder what laws could be changed. We live in a very different world now than 1918 when many current regulations were put in place. Why is it okay to say "it's allowed in ther regulations" for one method (spinners), and others excluded (8 guage, live decoys, punt...

HMM, because so many like spinners...

I didn't realize I was so stupid that I didn't know the regulations. So, I'll ask another way, why is one acceptible and thwe other not? I can only kill 6 birds a day. It doesn't matter HOW I kill them, and regs will change if I kill too may, right? So, why can't I use live decoys and...

HMM, because so many like spinners...

Mark, So it only matters if "it's legal?" Live decoys were outlawed almost 100 years ago. I would guess that their success wouold be similar to spinners and they'd be a whole lot more work. One acceptable...the other not. Wondered why live decoys weren't considered for the Conservation...

HMM, because so many like spinners...

Why can't I use live decoys? They're a whole lot more work than spinners (year 'round), and probably similar in effectiveness. Clint
