Monday rant, since everyone enjoys that....

Best customer service I ever got was from my state DIFW office. I took Hunter Safety in high school and then didn't take up hunting until I was almost 40. I went to the office and asked whether they would have a record. "What year did you take it?" "1981 or 1982." "Where?" "At the Maine...

    DIY Cape Cod

I have not hunted the Cape, but I've done a lot of salt marsh hunting in Maine. Are you dead set on eiders? Because you could hunt puddle ducks and divers in the salt marshes on foot, or better yet with a canoe or kayak to help with access and retrieving. Pay attention to tides--what's a...

    Fuel Tank Question

Yeah, I wondered if maybe the small engines need a better bulb. But a siphon is a siphon once you get the line filled, right? Gonna call the one local Suzuki mechanic, who is a good guy and won't try to rip me off.

    Fuel Tank Question

Might be. I found some other Suzuki hoses that were around $100 that specifically mentioned they are NOT suitable for the DF4 and DF6 models. This one says it works with all 6-30 hp motors, so perhaps I don't need to worry. I'll check with a Suzuki dealer to see what will work. Let me now go...

    Fuel Tank Question

I bought a 6 hp Suzuki outboard for a Grumman Sport Boat that will be used mostly for fishing, but will also see some duck hunting use. The motor has an internal tank, which holds enough fuel--about a quart, I think--for perhaps an hour of running time. That's usually enough for short trips...

    Ruddy Shelduck

I don't disagree--witness past discussions here about how a black/mallard hybrid "counts" in your bag limit. But if I'm paying big money to an outfitter to organize a hunt for me in some exotic location, I expect them to know the rules and navigate that for me. There are also clients who ask...

    Ruddy Shelduck

I'd criticize an outfitter who says he's not sure what's legal because of a "fuzzy nexus" no matter who he organized the trip for.

    Ruddy Shelduck

There is an Outdoor Life article out now that has more information than I've seen to date. There is also this quote from an outfitter who organizes hunts around the world that, in my opinion, gives a pretty poor impression of waterfowlers. "On international waterfowl hunts like this one...

One of the great things about this site in the fairly long time I've been here is the lack of political posts. This one has not gone off the rails, but it's the first I've seen in a long time. Leaving personalities out of it, if you find yourself standing over a pile of dead birds and can't...

    NDR- Portland Maine

All the suggestions above are good. Add Eventide Oyster House to your restaurant list. You'll stand in line as there are no reservations, but it'll be worth it. Portland Head Light, in my home town, is only a short drive from Portland in Cape Elizabeth. Town park. Great food trucks. Good...

    NDR - Shingles

My mother had a bad case in her early 30's on a family camping trip. +1 on anti-virals if not already too late.

    NDR: Cleaning Fish

They struggle in Maine--the land of lobster untouched except by water and butter, white clam chowder, B+M Baked Beans, and whoopie pies. Our current local "cuisine" worry is whether red snapper hot dogs can survive with a red dye that was just banned...

    NDR: Cleaning Fish

That all sounds great, but no Panko bread crumbs? Sacrilege! OTOH, I like perch/crappie/pike/pickerel dusted with a mix of cumin/garlic/and a mix of several kinds of dried chilis. Dust and pan sear. For me it would be heavy on the chipotles, but my formerly Minnesotan wife and inlaws think a...

    NDR: Cleaning Fish

Good steel makes a huge difference. Most commercial fillet knives are stainless--and that makes sense since they get wet and often exposed to salt water. But I have a good flexible blade boning knife in my kitchen in good carbon steel that is a whole lot easier to get sharp and keep sharp.

    Winter is here. Who’s hunting?

I caught a couple of black sea bass while targeting false albacore on the south shore of Cape Cod a couple of years ago. Harvest was closed at the time. I'm told they are great food fish. Yesterday I jigged up a big mess of yellow perch and one black crappie yesterday while waiting for flags...

    Winter is here. Who’s hunting?

What are those fish? Don't look like my mental image of bluegills. And what's the big one at the bottom of the left stringer? Big fileting job for somebody!

    Stupid is as stupid does

The other lesson here--at least as far as the video shows--is that if you are going to pick a fight with a guy a lot bigger than you, you ought to know how to fight. I have no idea who--if anyone--was in the right here, but I have to admit I chuckled when the little guy went down after all his...

    Pouring Decoy Anchors

FWIW, I just put some "new"--as in been in the duck cave end of the barn a long time, but purchased new and not previously used--strap anchors on some George Soule decoys I found. One bend around the neck after a single use and strips were peeling off the anchors at the long edges. No issues...

    Winter is here. Who’s hunting?

Our season closes tomorrow. Tough one for me. Was sick in our early season when the teal and woodies were around in my favorite pothole. Thanksgiving-Christmas trips on the salt and tidal rivers were slow. The usual Christmas-end of season madness on the salt was tough with wind, rain, lousy...

    Real Name Headaches

I used to be an active poster on a water polo forum--I played and coached and still referee college games--that did not require real names. When I joined it had a vibe a lot like this place--most of the posters knew other, often in real life, and either posted under their own names or we all...
