    Gordon MacQuarrie stories

Re. Zack Taylor. Our son loved the Old Duck Hunters pieces as his bedtime stories growing up. He would ask for them by name. Read "Ducks You Bat You!". So, when we discovered from a mutual aquaintance that Zack Taylor was retired to Maryland's Eastern Shore and lived only a few miles away, we...

What's on your work bench? September 2019

HI Steve. I decided to make this bird because buffleheads are a great boy's duck. I choose not to take them anymore, but was a buffie "expert" back in the late '60s. In those days, we lived on a dirt road that ended at a small bay called Buttermilk Bay. It was shallow, full of eelgrass, and a...

Anyone here an HVAC expert? Minisplit question for you.

Eric, I have an 18,000 btu Mitsubishi single head mini-split in my 660 sq ft(9' ceiling) insulated shop. It easily cools and heats that space quietly and very economically. Matt

    Retriever Project - water tested

That's a very interesting boat. Especially the transom. On canoes, a "Y" stern was often used for a motor, but the under water shape remained similar to a double ended canoe and therefore paddled very well. I'll bet your boat rows nicely. Matt

Guns you wish you still had

20 ga Remington Model 31 pump. Wish I still had it. Traded it for a brand new 16 ga 1100. Don't have that anymore either. Speaking of model 31s; I inherited an old friend's guns. One of them a 12 ga model 31 with a solid rib. When I threw the gun up, I could feel the stock rattle. Thinking it...

What was your first set of hunting decoys

Do you guys remember Trendecoys? I aquired 1/2 dozen black ducks around '69/'70. They were foam filled, hard, molded plastic. They have been repainted as mallards or pintails over the years and at sime time in the past returned to their black duck heritage. I still have them and use them in my...

    Al McCormick Broadbill Decoys

I remember those bug sprayers. Guess I never new they were called Flit guns. I looked up the active ingredient in Flit. It was permethrin, the same insecticide used today to treat bug clothing, and spray our clothes to keep chiggers and ticks away while turkey hunting etc. Anyone know what...

    Al McCormick Broadbill Decoys

I just realized that I have one of Mr McCormack's black ducks. It was given to me by the late Malcolm Bahrenburg a number of years ago. The wide keel is stamped "Mr Decoy Al McCormack". It also has what I presume to be the owner's name "Langan" stamped in a keel weight. Matt
