    Morning solo hunt

Fine looking grassing job on the front of that boat. Is it natural, local material?

It Seems Like Internet Forums are Dying

Agreed, and sometimes worry if this forum too will go the way of the dinosaur. Certainly hope not. I have learned so much of value (both huntingwise and otherwise) from reading posts on this forum. Thanks for keeping it going.

    Grassed boat and ice

Patrick, This year I'm trying a new grassing method (which I hope will avoid icing problems). The method is to use twine to tie natural grass (salt marsh hay in my case) to several bungee cords, and then to hook the grassed bungee cords to the boat's grass rails. I imagine this technique...

    Black Duck Decoy Setup Question

Thanks for the input, folks. All good food for thought. I'm leaning toward setting this decoy by itself, sort of as a focal point. To me it's the best looking of the 7 dekes. Of course the real ducks may have a different opinion. On a side note, Chris N., I don't think blacks were the...

    Black Duck Decoy Setup Question

I like to put out a set of 7 black duck decoys when I hunt the salt ponds here in Rhode Island. I have 6 regular size and 1 much larger than the rest (its a stray mallard I found washed ashore years ago which I repainted as a black duck). Anybody got any thoughts they're willing to share on...

    Small outboard value?

Chris, in 2008 I happily paid $350 for a 1984 or 5 Nissan 5 horse, 2-stroke. It's still running, and I'm still quite happy with it. $500 sounds like a decent price to me if your prospective motor is running well.

When is cold weather a factor?

This week we went for an afternoon hunt on a cove in a salt pond. The temperature was about 18 degrees when we arrived at the boat ramp around 11:30 a.m. For me, the hunting spot was an approximately 2-mile boat ride from the ramp. My friend, not needing a boat ramp, had put in at a spot...

Great day for what has been the slowest second season I can remember.

This raises an interesting question for painting black duck decoys (a project I'm presently in the middle of); what to paint on the female black duck bill. Maybe it doesn't matter, but I'm having fun trying to make these as realistic as possible. Anyway, I took some photos of a female...

DIY video on "How to make home made grass mats"

John, Thanks so much for sharing this info. I've been trying to learn how to construct those mats. This looks like just the ticket.

    Sneakbox suggestions

Pat, I hunt Rhode Island's salt marshes in a sort of sneakbox I constructed. It's only 11 feet long, and is best when hunted alone, but I've transported other folks in it on many trips to hunting spots in the salt ponds. If you weigh 200 pounds or less I'd be more than happy to bring you...

    Yesterdays hunt with no ice

On a hunt a few years ago a seal kept popping up periodically in the waters near to where I was hunting most of the day. Since it was a slow day, I found it helped keep the afternoon interesting. Later, another hunter offered his opinion that this seal was hanging around in hopes that it...

Thanks Bill. Grassed it last evening, and it held up well on the highway driving afterward.

    October blackduck

This is just not fair. How am I going to get the ducks to fly to my crummy decoys once they get a look at this one?

    Spray Dodger

After much pondering, I have added a spray dodger shown above. Wanted to express thanks to Dave D and Chris S for the pointers they generously shared concerning this project.

    Duracoat question

Steve, that's a great idea. My 870 could definitely use some improving (I'm primarily a saltwater duck hunter as well). Wish I'd heard about this way back before duck season was imminent. I wonder how long it would take before a gun painted in this manner would be dry enough to use?
