Have you been able to learn where and when it was banded? I do my duck hunting in RI, almost always black ducks, so I'm especially curious. Thanks.

A few brant have shown up in Narragansett Bay. Checked out a few (actually many) coves today in a nice place in our state where I enjoy hunting black ducks, and was shocked to see only 3. Some years in the past I seem to recall many more than that by now.

Dick, I've found the distance miscalculation can happen on both ends of the scale. I've had the experience you described of taking what you thought was maybe a 30 yard shot, only to pace it off and find it was maybe 45 or 50. Then yesterday I shot a wigeon at what i thought was 40 yards only...

Derek, That's exactly it. A few hunts ago I got a black duck only about 20 minutes after arriving for an afternoon hunt. Still I stuck around until about 3:30. Granted, occasionallly something other than a black duck will show in this saltmarsh, so there is always hope of taking another...

If you were me this season one duck per hunt would be your limit (all I've gotten this year have been black ducks). But I hear what you are saying. I'm very happy to take one of those beautiful waterfowl home at the end of a day on the saltmarsh.

Yeah, sounds like the Texas rig is not going to work well where I hunt. I don't think I've ever seen a 9 foot tide here, but the range is big enough to be an issue. Thanks for all the help.

Thanks to all for the helpful input. Nick, I'm wondering if the thicker, stiffer line to which you've switched is a name-brand product, or is it something you've improvised?

Glad I asked about this, and very thankful for the input. With my existing setup there are multiple issues: -Those little, bendable mushroom anchors (the ones you can wrap around the decoy's head) have almost all now broken -The thin, string decoy lines I've been using for ages...

It's long past time to overhaul the rigging on my decoys. The vast majority of the time I hunt on saltponds and salt marches. Many times the decoys are set over a sandy bottom. Given this, does anybody know if it is useful to go with clear (I guess monofilament) decoy line? Also...

The brant I've shot were good eating (better than many a duck I've consumed). I ate the breasts and legs (with skin and fat removed). Maybe that explains the difference.

Thanks, Dave. The holes may be functional as well as decorative if they prevent water from pooling on the updeck side of the oarlock.
