    Jump start for the migration

Yup, that's the truth. After yesterday's adventure my truck is completely covered in mud! Completely! I had to clean the side windows with a spray bottle and rag this morning to see out through the mud. Time to hit the car wash. It was about 20°F this morning and most of the ponds and...

    Jump start for the migration

Alberta and Saskatchewan got hit with an early wintry storm. It is making its way east. This may push some birds on the strong north winds. The Trans Canada Highway was closed yesterday and some of the back roads had two foot drifts. Most sloughs were badly slushed over.

    Jump start for the migration

Well this is a game changer. Sloughs are slushed up and the screaming winds have large numbers of migratory birds seeking protection on any open water. Supposed to clear and warm tomorrow. Sure hope the birds stick it out.

How Has Aging Affected How You Hunt?

Great post and particularly timely for me. Knees and hips are the biggest issue. Both can get very sore. I know everything would be so much easier if I just lost some weight. I tend to hunt a lot smarter than I used to. Fewer canoe trips, more fields. Boats are my favorite hunt but that...

    Saskatchewan 2017

It is very dry. Sloughs that have held water for years are completely dry. Most are down at least a couple of feet. Birds are concentrating in fields near water and the patterns are different this year. We are seeing a lot fewer BW teal but everything else is looking ok.

    Saskatchewan 2017

Jason's dog is 17 months old and this is his first season. He is a small lab and he did a great job for us but really struggled with some of the giant Canada geese. It was almost comical watching him try to drag in a bird that weighed over half his weight. What a way to start his career.

    Saskatchewan 2017

We are east of Yorkton. Hard frost two nights ago and right on freezing last night. Not a lot of birds yet but it has started. I'm lucky... just a 9 hour drive to my friends house.

Day 2. Beautiful sunrise and a limit of geese and ducks. Life is good.

    Saskatchewan 2017

Arrived safely last night and after a good sleep we scouted half the day. We shot a gorgeous slough this afternoon and managed a good assortment of ducks. At the end of it all we were treated to an amazing sunset.

    1989 18' Outlaw duck boat

I will say, having sat on top of an upside down boat on Lake Huron for an extended period while waiting for a Coast Guard rescue, that even the safest of boats, with or without a motor, can find itself upside down when unexpected severe weather arrives. Fortunately I lived to tell the tale...

    Drought Monitor 08/24/2017

Every day I drive by a particular slough that is something of a bellwether for the water levels. For the first time in five years it is pretty much dry and has no ducks. The pond behind my house is down a couple of feet.

    test photos

Thought I would try this from my phone. Got out to the back country with the dogs. Drake will find a stick anywhere... even though I discourage it. The first image is Ram Falls on the Ram River. The second is the North Saskatchewan River where it emerges from the Rockies. This is fairly close...

    NoDak pond status report

I know a lot of folks here visit Manitoba and Saskatchewan. Things are a little tough in southern SK.

    NoDak pond status report

Yup... and you can get into it pretty good around here. I worry about it every year until we have had a frost or two. Season opens here in 10 days.

    NoDak pond status report

Most of our smaller sloughs have dried up. Others are just a fraction of what they were. Good news though... the birds are concentrated on the smaller ponds and lakes. It looks like it was a good year for nesting around here.
