    Ganseklein

Without stealing the author's thunder, I just want to say I made Ganseklein from Hank Shaw's "Duck, Duck, Goose." With the potato dumplings it tastes like a stuffing soup. That is; like thanksgiving bread stuffing in soup form. Highly recommend the book if you want regular ole recipes, or you...

    Duck Landjaegers??

"Home production of quality meats and sausages" probably has a recipe in or, or Hank Shaw's "Duck, Duck, Goose"

What's on the bench? January 2022

Dani- CT is one such state. Mergs in the regular duck bag. Interesting Bill, no one I hunt with shoots mergs except for me, and even that is rare. However with sea ducks I've heard people like to give them away. Curious if the Atlantic flyway commission will extinguish the separate sea duck...

    Decoy ID for the gurus

Sadly no, did not. He's not a hunter. I believe it died out with his father

    Decoy ID for the gurus

Thanks tod. I debated using them today in the scaup but the big raft didn't want to commit anyways. Maybe if I had brought them... I also think the carving of the back on the drake to get the white and black feathers was a unique touch.

    Decoy ID for the gurus

Got these as a gift from my brother in law. Apparently they were his grandfathers - from Youngstown, NY. Curious if the thought is they were carved by said grandfather or if a commercial line, and roughly the decade they may be from. Flat bottom, appears to be pine body. Can snap some more...

    Prop Question (with picture now)

Now that you said this you might want to consider staying aluminum, or knocking on wood

    Scaup, Brant, and Gadwall Notes

Too bad you two old men will never be able to catch me on foot! [cool] Henry though, I'll be done if you send him after me

    Scaup, Brant, and Gadwall Notes

Ken and my spot is also yours, but my actual secret spot is shooting off marina docks in a north west wind. No one else hunts that one that I've seen. Nice and cushy. Don't even need a boat if you have the dog

    Scaup, Brant, and Gadwall Notes

There are plenty of Brant off napatree point (closer to you) and along the harbors and beaches in CT. I haven't seen the scaup myself but Ken Morris said he saw some in an area we both hunt. I haven't seen them in our secret spot yet but I also haven't been checking as it's not in my usual...

    Killing Cripples Quickly and Humanely

Agreed. I scotch doubled two green heads while walking the marshes of Maine this weekend. I was u loaded, near the road heading back to the truck. Two green heads flew out of a 1' wide draw and flew off. I was able to load and shoot and hit both with a single shell of BOSS #5 bismuth at about...

I heard Jack was afraid of Beaver Tod. How funny

    Rats! NDR

Not actually rats, but they look like them. Shiloh (Brittany) decided to wait until I left the house to bring my daughters to the dentist today to begin giving birth. I was actually concerned she was going to wait until I left Thursday night on my ride up to hunt with Troy Fields. Total of 6 and...

    Killing Cripples Quickly and Humanely

I've found pieces of the bismuth in random chunks. Like if you smashed the shot with a hammer. I assume it's from contact with bone, but maybe breaking apart in the barrel too. Outside of my realm

    Killing Cripples Quickly and Humanely

I'll agree with Jay and say that the bismuth is nice, except the pellets shatter inside the birds when they hit bone. That being said, I bought a "case" of 200 boss shells (2-3/4" 3/5 combo). Paid more than I'm used to for shells, though they are "reasonable" in this day and age. I'd say I'm...

    Killing Cripples Quickly and Humanely

I go back to my poultry raising days and make a cut just below the bottom side of the bill (where the jugular is). It makes a big mess, especially with geese, but it does get most of the blood out. I had to do it to one today. We got two in the boat and they look stoned, I'm working on...

Turning the corner on sea ducks

Andrea and I have been having a slow go this year on ducks. This is the first year I got a nice fat goose egg on ducks for the early season week, our new goose farm put a hold on us hunting there due to cows being scared (we still have the field), and the weather is wildly warm. All that...

How's the migration in your area?

Geese are moving pretty good here but everything else is slow. It's still mid to high 40s when often it's in the 30s in the day here.
