I believe all the rear decked boats I,ve seen made to be poled from rear deck have it recessed and not flush. Enabling the poler to feel the edge instead of stepping off into the drink. His is flush same as bow although the shape does remind one of a railbird skiff.

That would be typical of most builds of that type even extending into fiberglass of this day.

They,ve been around for years but have faded from the catalogs in probably last 10 or so, maybe more. Main complaint I recall was they wouldn,t breath and thus sweat you bad with any exertion same as Neoprene waders would thus trapping in dampness in cold weather.
