I Am Content With My Fleet, But I Wish I Had Bought....

I don’t even have to look, people send me ads and pictures all the time. Occasionally thoughtful folks drop off well worn duckboats in my yard! I’ve gotten better about moving things along now though. If I ever see a really good deal on a sport boat I’ll buy it….. what a phenomenal multi...

    Decoy keel design

we definitely dont deal with tides here in minnesota and north dakota but i have in the past propped floaters up in the field when the need arose. I really prefer my decoys to self right.

    3 Pintails

My other observation is that without significant rainfall in the very near future the nesting season in the dakotas will be dismal….however….. since the tiny temporary potholes favored by pintails are already dry maybe they will make use of more permanent spots and success will be higher? 🤷‍♂️

    3 Pintails

Oh it’s definitely out of whack, it was mostly drakes from what I saw ….. although my eyes are definitely drawn to those and my observations are very unscientific!

Cody, How tall are your river keels? That’s something I want to experiment with.

    Decoy keel design

I tried Texas rigs and didn’t like them primarily because I might be in water 8” to 8’ I think I’ll do 3 or 4 different designs on these buffs and see if there’s a noticeable difference to me.

    Decoy keel design

The one I completed I did add notches as these will all have individual lines and weights. Is there anything out there that dives deeply into size and shape? Surely someone has done the legwork for me 😂

    3 Pintails

I was just in North Dakota snow goose hunting….. the pintail show every morning was pretty amazing! I’ve never seen so many! Last fall we would have our pintail limit in short order and then pass them the rest of the morning.

    Decoy keel design

I’m currently working on a rig of bufflehead decoys for myself , I got to thinking about the keel design…. Does shape and size make much difference? I have 1 bird almost complete and will float test it before I cut out the rest of them.

    Pluckers?

The one in the picture was amazing and unless the bird was badly damaged already it didn’t tear any skin…… maybe that’s why it cost $800

    Pluckers?

Last fall I had the opportunity to use one of these pluckers….. it worked great. Orvis sells them and as you can imagine they are ridiculously expensive!! Has anyone used any of the drums available on smazon to build their own ?

    Socks

I wear a pair of snug wool socks , usually darn tough or something similar, then a larger loose fitting pair of wool socks over those. I like them tall enough that I can roll the tops of them down over the tops of my boots to keep them in place . This is especially important with Mickey or bunny...

I’m feeding inukshuk , it’s a great product recommended to me by a couple of friends who are professionals. Takes very little food daily, poops are small and not that smelly.

    November Workbench

Eyes are really quite easy to make, mine are pretty basic. I use modge podge or uv resin. I have to get going on some spearing decoys and I’ll make sure to take some pics.

Readings on the Armistice day storm?

Chuck nailed it. All hell broke loose is a great book(wish I could remember who I borrowed it to) Wings in the wind is a good read. I remember reading an article in outdoor life probably in the early 80s called “the day the duck hunters died” I need to try find that one again .

    What have I got here?

I had a bit of a dilemma, found a pile of mallards using a slough too shallow or without access for any of my duck boats but too deep for the dog stand. Then I remembered these little boats so I pushed one in there this morning with my 5 month old pup Skaði riding in it. Quick mallard limit and...
