barn cleanout: coffin box, eider sleds, decoy anchors, you name it

Hi All-- Cleaning out the barn and moving out some gear that I have not used in a while. please PM me if you're interested in any of this. I'm based in NE MA BTW, and some of this stuff is not so shippable... also some of this is being listed elsewhere too (trying to move it out!) thanks...

    Metal strips for keeson abrasion

Hi All-- The brass half-ovals protecting the keelsons on my BBII are giving up the ghost (after 10 years) so I need to flip the boat over and replace them. I'm thinking of going with aluminum following eric's scaup, but thought I'd toss out a question to see if anyone had found something...

decoy bag brainstorm on a marsh skiff any ideas?

I use to hunt out of a kayak and learned the hard way about how changes in centers of gravity can impact the stability of a boat. Let's just say rolling a kayak at o-dark-30 is a real bummer. I eventually went to a decoy sled that towed behind the kayak. I never had to go far so that worked for...

    Has anybody read this book?

Hey William-- No offense taken and boy I hope not. I found it interesting though that someone thinks we have gotten far enough to write what I hear is a well researched and intelligent argument to kick kids loose in the woods and fields. It's along the same lines as the backlash that was...

    Has anybody read this book?

"Last Child in the Woods." Apparently it's a call to get more kids out of doors, referencing in part a growing irony that kids today will know more about the rain forest in Brazil than a creek in the backyard. I heard about it the other day and suspect that someone here might have a view on...

    Repainting BBII

Thanks guys. Appreciate the feedback. I'm not keen to resand the boat. The more I've done it (and I have done it here and there for repairs) the more it cuts into the underlying surface, especially when i use a circular sander (8" with the 3m soft back pad). Most of the work to be done is on the...

    Repainting BBII

Hey all-- I'm thinking of repainting the BBII and I'm hoping there might be some thoughts from the group as to how to do it with minimum fuss. When i first built the boat I primed with Ditzler's and then Lou's FME. That original painting as been bullet proof. Over the years however, through...

    Building Grass Rails...... pics

I'm coming at it from the perspective that at some point the rails will need to be replaced. If they're epoxied to the deck they will need to be cut off and ground down to the deck. I'd rather not do that. As for boat life, perhaps I'm missing something? when I put my rails on (after I painted...

    Building Grass Rails...... pics

IMO I would not epoxy them onto the boat. I've had mine on for some 9 years (mahogany) and they're starting to show signs of age (checking, some cracks, etc) . I can imagine a time a time when I'll need to make a new set and the thought of having to grind them off is not a happy one. I've had...

    Pettit vs Parkers vs FME

I'd second the FME over Parker's. I painted the BBII first in FME and then redid the deck in parkers when I did some rehab on the boat. The parkers has not held up at all. The FME, first done 8 years ago, is rock solid. couldn't beat it off with the stick. So good in fact that I'm thinking...

Old Time Wood Floor Finish Question

Hi Mike-- yes, I've heard of it. My dad uses it to coat the interior of a clinker-planked small rowboat every year. Goes on tacky, but is wonderful for the planks and after years of coatings like this, the interior of the boat has a real dark coloring to it. it's good stuff... Jamus

Air compressor: to fix or not

i'm painting a coffin box that I just rehabbed. I don't need the compresor to paint it, but then it was just sitting in the basement and this project was the inspiration. how are you doing?
