    Catalpa For Decoys???

Was out at my dad's house today and he told me that he was going to cut down a Catalpa tree. Wanted to know if I wanted it for decoys. The tree is large enough that I would be able to get several teal bodies out of it. Has anyone here used Catalpa for making decoys? Any good?

    Carving Knives?

Started doing a bit of chip carving lately since I can do it in the house and don't have any dust to deal with. Been using a Warren knife with the replacable blades but really want something a bit nicer. I also suck when it comes to sharpening blades so that is a skill I will have to learn. What...

Cassie has passed on. I loved her so much.

Sorry to hear this Eric. I enjoyed the time we spent with Cassie. She had a great spirit. When I broke the news to my daughter I thought she was going to break out in tears. She will be missed.

    Hot Redhead

Decoy looks very nice. Love Redheads. Did you not paint the nostrils or the other black markings on the bill for a reason? Not critiquing... just wondering.

    question for carvers ?

I recommend Pat Godin's Volume 1(Marsh Ducks-All North American species of puddle ducks in both hens and drakes.) and 2(Divers-All North American species of divers in both hens and drakes.). You might want to widen the patterns just a bit. Easy to do and makes the decoy more stable. Here is a...

    Good reading

Google books is great! I have used it for years to find old publications that talk about local history of my area. Was searching a few weeks ago and found they had books on hunting, decoy making, etc.

    western red cedar and decoys

From my experience it all depends. Is the knot loose? If you have small loose knots you can always drill them out with a forstner bit and glue in a dowel. Larger loose knots would take some creativity to replace. It might be possible to epoxy over a large loose knot to where it doesn't create...

    carving tool question

YES! Order at least one extra shaft. I ordered a Foredom from Willy and he asked me if I would like to save some shipping and order another shaft. I told him that I wouldn't need another shaft. I think I carved for like 30 minutes before I got it caught in my t-shirt and broke it. I called him...

    DU dinner decoys

I used to donate several decoys to DU and Delta chapters all over the country. No doubt it is for a good cause, but I too have to pay for my materials. I figured that I would make up my cost by the donated decoy generating sales. The biggest problem is that pretty much none of the folks that the...

    Stretch Decoy Line Question

Bill, Avery makes a product called Stretchee Cords. They will allow pretty much any anchor to do what you want to do. I have used them on all types of weights just experimenting and they are great. Hold up well too. I never relieve the tension during the off season and haven't had any problems.
