    JD Sneakbox Renovation

Quite different than the skeg on the "as built". It measures only 2-1/2". I will add the additional 2" that you have. Did you run it all the way forward as a 2" add or did you taper it in shorter?

    JD Sneakbox Renovation

The outboard bracket is made of fiberglass. I am surprised that it held up for years. Once I get it off I will evaluate it. The transom is only 3/4" thick. I like the way you doubled yours The good news is that the skeg is strong. No dry rot in the insert board. How much did you add to...

    JD Sneakbox Renovation

There are actually 5 holes. The brass 1/4-20 bolts and nuts that attached the keel worked loose over time. I plan on adding an inch to the skeg which is integral to the hull form and leaving the keel off. There is less work in the hull bottom than I thought. The hull and deck on this boat...

The added keel is the source of the leak.

    JD Sneakbox Renovation

The sneakbox has a very low profile and hides well on the marsh even without grass. When the tide rises it sticks out. Will need grass rails as part of the renovation. I need to get this upside down and take a look at the underside. There was a slight leak which I thought came through the...

    JD Sneakbox Renovation

I am starting the rebuild of a fiberglass sneakbox. I picked it up last year and got out in it 5 times before the season ended. Boat handles well and draws almost no water. This is a similar boat to the Steve Sanford sneakbox that Steve redid in 2016. It is bit rugged and well used but...

What's on your WORK BENCH - August 2020

I am repairing the Len Tucker geese and brant I got a few months ago. They have the head fastened with dowels that are drilled all the way through the keel and cross nailed with 4D nails. All were still attached after what looks like some years of rough handling. The rear of the keels have a...

It Takes a Long Time For Man To Change His Habits... RE: Lead Shot

Fishing in Merrick Bay we caught some Flounder I put them in a clean 5 gallon Spackle pail. When I took them out to clean them I found regurgitated ribbed muscle bait and 2 copper clad pellets that a Founder had ingested in the bottom of the pail. Even fish will pick up spent shot. I am...

    Another HELP ME

Kroil is good stuff. I used it to free up frozen Flathead Ford engines and it worked. I would try warming it and soaking it in Kroil before putting oxy-acetylene to it. I know the hot wrench will work but it will damage the temper in the steel. Joe

    Another HELP ME

Whenever I had to heat to break lose rust frozen parts it had to be cherry red. That would kill the temper. JD

Tom, That is a nice decoy. Same refrigerator cork body on some that I got. Having an OP model to match will help. I plan on gunning over these next season,

Steve - appreciate the information. Especially correct first name. Not sure that Brant you posted photo of is a repaint. The one I Klean Stripped had the same white highlights on the side. The back color is identical to what I found. Could be a Lem Tucker repaint. on his own decoy. Joe

What's on your WORK BENCH - June 2020

George - That is the plan. I have about 50% of the original paint left on the first one that I can use to pattern and match colors. I plan on stripping the house paint off the rest and painting to the original pattern. It is a simple pattern but it will make an effective Brant decoy. I...

I found an article on Len Tucker, West Sayville, Long Island. That is right where the blocks were found. The head was made from a pine tree about 4" in diameter. '

Frank - They came out of Bayport / Sayville / Bluepoint area. All have root heads. One appears to have always been a Canada Goose just by the shear size of it. The original lot was 13. One went to a friend as a finders fee. Where is Len from? Joe Daly

What's on your WORK BENCH - June 2020

I recently acquired 12 unattractive Canada Goose decoys. 5 had loose heads with one that had the head completely off. They came from a sale of the contents of a house in Sayville Long Island. 10 were made of life vest cork and 2 refrigerator cork. I "Klean Stripped" the decoy with the head...

    Y-Board Diagram and Pictures

Y or V boards work. I used them for Old Squaws on Long Island north shore. Strung out on a single anchor. Look like soldiers in formation. No other decoys. They stool right to them. I also use Y boards for Brant with full body decoys mixed. I can dig up the Old Squaw pattern if you need...
